I need one to make a fire barrel out of, so it does not matter if it leaks or has holes. You'd think they would be easier to come by, but I can't figure out where to buy one from.

AAA at avent ferry. Ask if they have one you can have. They may have one available if they haven't taken it to the dump/scrap yard yet.

Would it be worth calling around to oil change places? I thought maybe they got their oil in 55 gal. drums and then just discarded them when they were empty.

Do you mean like the trash barrels at local parks? I believe that is where the homeless find them

I got one. Its actually a 55 gallon rain barrel, has water outlet at bottom, and water inlet on top. White in color. brand new, never been used. $20

I'd think it's something more along the lines of larceny than vandalism

I had a friend pick up two empty oil barrels from a local quick lube place a couple years back. They just had them sitting there and said take them.

Got one from a guy on craigslist named Dave. He sells about 1,000 of them every year. He has a trash hauling business and he picks them out, cuts the slots for airflow, and sells them for $12. Smart guy.
