Looking around for a last minute gift for my mom for Christmas -- was wondering if anyone knew of any good laptops on sale between the $399-$499 price range -- trying to get the most bang for my buck -- any help is appreciated!

We will need a little bit more info...what is she going to use it for? Netbook or something bigger? etc.

If you don't need a dvd/cd drive and and like something more portable but not quite netbook suck the dell vostro V13 is pretty hot.

Otherwise just figure out what you need and custom compare the custom build prices for dell, toshiba, lenovo, hp.

I know that Best Buy currently has a serviceable Gateway for 380. I got an email from a cousin asking about how well it would perform.

Compaq has a very similar one at Staples for the same price.

I mean, this laptop isn't going to impress anyone, but for what you get 380 seems like a bargain.

She would definitely prefer a laptop instead of a netbook -- 15.4" or 17" -- she wont be gaming or anything like that -- she mainly uses it for random internet things (flash games, email, facebook, etc) as well as some website design and photoshop use. Would like to get a machine that will last her at least 2-3 years for her basic needs.

^^^Looks like a sweet deal. Not sure how Gateway support is anymore though, been since 2000 since I've had to deal with it.
