For those of us who have graduated, when did you finally start giving money back to your alma mater? 12/18/2009 2:32:53 PM |

I've only donated via the wolfpack club for the purposes of buying football tickets. I started as soon as I graduated, but they have/had a deal where it was like 50 or 100 bucks to join as a recent grad. Whenever that ran out, i started donating the minimum to stay a member, and have just done that every year.
Whenever I get around to buying lifetime rights of my own I guess i'll have to give more but for now, I get season tickets from friends. 12/18/2009 2:36:01 PM |

My work has an development fund with the college of management that I drop about two bills in every year since graduation. Plus the $120/yr. that the WPC hits me up for. That's about it. 12/18/2009 4:49:17 PM |

NCSU forfeited any chance of getting money from me at the very last second possible for them to fuck things up. My undergrad experience was pretty good, although I've since realized that there are/were a lot of problems with the ECE curriculum and advising that really should be addressed. But anyway, it was good enough for me to want to give back.
But then.... ECE Graduation in Stewart theater, December 2002 was the sorriest excuse for a graduation ceremony I've ever seen. It would have been embarrassing for a middle school graduation, much less a highly respected engineering program. It was an embarrassment to everyone in attendance, and I literally walked out of the theater that day and said "fuck you" to NC State and any future financial support from me.
I posted an epic rant in The Lounge soon after it happened. Too bad the archives have been purged since then... 12/18/2009 8:22:53 PM |

i really don't feel like typing it all out again, but.... a few "highlights" - the speaker (forgot his name. one of the higher-ups in ECE) literally could not pronounce about 70% of the names. He wasn't even close. Sure, they were mostly Asian names, but we learned that the CSC advisors went to every single graduate before graduation and learned how to say each of their names
- the lines they put us in were totally fucked. Many, many people were in the wrong order (they lined us up) so when names were called, people were constantly stepping out of line, or whole lines had to go back and sit down and get other lines up
- several people were completely missed. As in, they were next in line at the edge of the stage, but then their names were never called. They had to stand there like jackasses while people passed them. Eventually, a faculty member had to go over and ask their names, write them down, take that paper over to the podium where they were announced
- they ran out of seating for the Grad students. Undergrad sat in the theater, and Grad's had chairs on the stage. Some-fucking-how, they didn't know how many Grad students they had and at least 1/2 dozen had to stand the whole time near the wings of the stage beside all the seats
Those are some specifics I can remember (it's been..... 7 years now? jesus), but basically, it was just completely unprofessional and everyone running it was ill-prepared. It showed a total lack of respect to the students, who just spent 4-6+ years paying in thousands of dollars, and to the families who came great distances to see what was supposed to be a special occasion. 12/18/2009 8:56:27 PM |

I'm not throwing stones or anything here (I haven't given any money), but this is the kind of shit that keeps NC State pretty low in the BS rankings like USN&WR. Alumni giving (percentage of alumni who give any money at all) is a significant factor in their rankings.
But I haven't given any money. Maybe I'll join the Alumni Association and give the yearly minimum eventually... 12/18/2009 9:33:07 PM |

If you do decide to give, scrutinize where the money is going and for what. I had my other alma mater (Virginia Tech) ask me to pledge. I said I would, did some research, and found out where the money was going. Thank You No. I'm still considering donating directly to my program (NOT department) I was in. Anyways, scrutinize if you do donate. 12/18/2009 9:46:16 PM |

agentlion is my brother, and at the time, I felt really bad about missing his graduation ceremony. I was caught up doing the final report for my senior design project (MS Word exploded and cost us a few hours of work, etc etc etc) and ran over and got there just as all the graduates were leaving the ceremony. I felt like a pretty good dickhead for missing it when I was on campus at the time. But then he described the experience and I didn't feel so bad.

Additionally, the general endowment goes a (very) long way in those damn rankings. And our endowment totally sucks. But, on the other hand, it's not like your puny donation will even make a scratch in a number that big.12/18/2009 9:59:26 PM |

You have to dig down into the school's website a bit more than just the surface crap they present: http://www.campaign.vt.edu/campaign-vt/?q=by-use
After digging, when I saw approximately 3/4 of it being spent for general budgeting (i.e. whatever we think it should go towards) or faculty-related items, I passed. "Current operations" ... right.
