Quote :
"This Thursday, the oft-maligned comedian Dane Cook will guest star on "Louie," and by the looks of the promo, this is something you won't want to miss -- especially given the years of rocky history between the two comedians.

Via IFC's blog:

A look says it all, right?

Over the years, Cook has been a punching bag for other comics, with many accusing him of joke theft and plagiarism. And one of the most pervasive claims, one that circulated for years within the comedy world, involved Louis CK, himself.

A few years ago, the website Fugly put together a compilation of material from both Louis CK and Dane Cook, where Cook clearly covers a few topics heard in previous CK sets -- jokes about being powerless to an impending accident, naming your kids, and having an itchy ass.

Cook doesn't repeat the jokes verbatim, but the general concepts are pretty similar. Though, as the blog Dead Frog pointed out in 2007, these were well-worn topics in comedy (who doesn't have an itchy ass joke these days?) and it's difficult to say for certain that Cook stole anything directly from CK.

Still, the claim was enough to send cries of plagiarism pulsing through a comedy community that was already suspicious of Cook; his jocular style, aggressive marketing tactics and mainstream appeal didn't gel with the typically underground, subtler style of the burgeoning alternative comedy scene, and it didn't help that he was fast becoming one of the most famous comedians in the country.

In January, 2010, CK spoke to Movieline about the controversy.

"When I first heard it, it pissed me off for a very unfair reason, which is I just didn’t like the dude," he said. "He just bummed me out aesthetically."

Still, CK went on to say that he wasn't ever sure that Cook had actually stolen anything, and was upset that Cook might have "suffered" from that accusation. The two had since exchanged e-mails about the issue, CK said, and were friendly whenever they saw each other.

Cook appeared on Marc Maron's WTF podcast in June of last year to address the claims himself, and to also respond to a claim from comedian Joe Rogan that he had stolen bits from him.

"In essence, we're talking about, in my lifetime, in 20 years of standup," he said, "we're talking about three things with Louie and I, out of all the material I've ever recorded, we're talking about four kind-of concepts."

When Maron asked if he ever credited CK for the similar jokes, Cook responded: "I didn't credit Louis CK because I never stole anything from Louis CK."

Cook said he'd never stolen "anything" in his life, and any similarities between the two comedians' material was just a coincidence. "You talk to guys that have known me the longest," he said, "They're going to look at you and go: you're crazy to think that Dane Cook steals."

Cook has moved away from stand-up a bit in recent years, focusing on a comedic film career. This fall, he's set to appear on Broadway in Neil Labute's "Fat Pig."

Louis CK, meanwhile, has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on "Louie.""

So, uh...what was the deal with Louie coming home to the nice house (the one from a few weeks back that he couldn't afford?) and getting the baby from the closet upstairs. I kept waiting for that to be a dream sequence, but...

Very confusing. Aside from that, what an awesome episode.

Was it not a flashback? That's how I interpreted it.

I don't think it was a closet, I think it was his and wife's bedroom or his daughter's bedroom. He opened the door to go to bed/say goodnight and was unexpectedly handed the baby by his wife. Any time his wife has been in a scene they've made a point not to show her, so that's how I interpreted it. And it was pretty obvious that it was a flashback.

Yeah, this show has just been so good.

This last episode is so heart warming, I'm tempted to share it with squares.

I don't think it's weird, but soooooo much different than routine network sitcoms/jersey shore and everything else that's popular on TV. I love it for that aspect alone.

I wouldn't use the word weird. Different seems more appropriate.

I definitely think it's a strange show (is that the same thing as 'weird' oh ye semantics police?)

I mean, think about the trick-or-treating incident, or the visit with his great aunt. There's an intentionally surreal, almost dream-like quality to a lot of the bizarre incidents in the show that really work and definitely set it apart from other shows. My girlfriend and I comment regularly to each other how strange the show is throughout the episodes.

I love how it blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. He has his real-life comedian friends on the show sometimes, then he might have a comedian friend who is a complete fabrication for all I know, but seems like his friend (the one who wanted to commit suicide). In the Dane Cook episode I had no idea about how much of the conversation they had was real or scripted.

It is sort of 'weird' when you compare to just about anything else on TV. It's high art compared to anything else on basic cable. Pretty cool watching Louis flex his writing and directing chops.

^^^The episode where he gets fired for telling an audience to stop giving money to the casino he's performing at happened to George Carlin, his idol. It's all a mix of real events and daydreaming. The early episode where a girl boards a helicopter to escape a date with Louie was the kicker for me.

Bandwagon fans b/c he doesn't even sell out charlie goodnights 3 or 4 years ago, and now that he's on FX he sells out DPAC in a few hours? He's been hilarious for years, not just the past two seasons on FX.
