ate lunch there on a whim today. Apparently opened early this month in the space where Hard Times Cafe succumbed to such, but now owned by Nile of Hibernian and Solas fame. Did a great job of recreating the feel of a 50's diner without losing the metropolitan appeal Glenwood South is trying so desperately to adopt. That said, I felt right at home in my leather riding jacket and jeans amongst the hungover young professionals still partying on daddy's credit.

Menu is pretty classic 50's Americana with a contemporary spin, and that it is well-executed with a location-appropriate price is no surprise; my "Demetri the Greek" burger (feta, artichoke, and kalamata olives) was pretty amazing and adding two jack-and-cokes brought my bill to $22 and change. The staff was friendly and the food quality, I'll most likely return when I feel my belt can spare the influx of lipids by substituting the missing space in my wallet.

And the best part? Full menu, 24 hours...bye, Ihop, Byehop.

So it's like Gypsy's or Ihop, but they have liquor? good stuff. I'll put it on the list.

Ate there on opening day. Service was a bit slow, but I can understand because it was fucking PACKED. Food was good. Will eat there again once it's calmed down.

I hear it's insane on Friday and Saturday nights.

i went on monday before the lunch crowd showed up

it didn't bowl me over... i found the setting to be contrived and frankly a little confused about what it was trying to be... spray painted "kiss" records?

the food wasn't too shabby, but i can think of other places i'd can get jazzed up diner/bar food

i would recommend it to anyone to try it once, but i can't see it being the type of place i'd really like to frequent

but if i have to pick a faux 50s diner, i'm gonna stick with gypsy's shiny

yeah gypsy's that diner where you'd see that bad kid on his bike smoking a cigarette and being a coy dick to the waitress

the diner is that diner where some high school musical shit is gonna break out, and you're the only one that doesn't know the song

My open faced burger with hash browns and cheese sauce looked incredible on paper, good on my plate and tasted just ok. Ordered burger medium, came at least well done. Hash browns were incredibly soggy by the time I got them. Fry-serving vessel is cool, but completely unnecessary and really just got in my way. Service was a bit slow (sat for 15 minutes with empty plates and empty glasses before waitress came back).

Go again? Yes.
Special trip to go there? No.
Consider going there during peak hours? No.
Should you try it? Sure.

The key to this place is that it is open 24/7 (and hopefully will stay that way). It's an important step for downtown.

I had the monte cristo and the eggs benedict there, and enjoyed both. Will probably go back sometime.

has hibernian always been owned by the same guys? I liked it years ago, but not so much anymore... food is bland, at best, and the atmosphere is nothing to write home about

^^ Pretty sure it has been owned by the same guy. He's a total cheapskate so I wouldn't be surprised if he's cheaping out on the food over there.

I loved the cary location when they did 10cent wings and dollar beers, but that deal is long gone. Also had fun there with some friends watching the stanley cup, but that was because of the friends and stanley cup- we coulda been in a basement with cases of busch light and I still would have enjoyed it

they had a great opportunity with this place, and it could have been either a decent restaurant that happened to be open 24 hours, or a shitty "you're lucky we're even open at this hour, now choke down this $8 tuna melt made of fancy feast and easy cheez" sort of place. guess which route they took.

this comment on the newraleigh article sums it up for me:

The 2 times I went they had Mac and cheese that was instant and pancakes that tasted like metal. The Guy that owns that place and hibernian couldn't try less hard with the food.

Since I don't live near campus, this was a great place to get food in my belly after a drunken night out downtown. Why aren't more things 24 hours?
