i had a great idea that maybe one of yall could pass on to time warner here it goes: if you're watching say, CBS, on primitive definition and want to switch to HD then you'd have to remember whether is channel 245 or 1256 or whatever why not have an HDTV button on the remote control so that if a channel has an HD equivalent you press one button an it switches to the HD channel or whatever

I know with DirectTV, you can configure your "Guide" to only show specific channels. We have ours setup such that if an HD option is available, we don't show the regular one. 1/22/2010 11:10:43 PM |

DirecTV by default goes to the HD channel when yuo have the HD box. It doesn’t list the SD separately, but you can still get to them if you want. 1/23/2010 3:01:47 AM |

dish does the same thing. you have the option of a HD only guide, and if you enter channel 5 for wral, it defaults to the HD version. if you hit the down button it will go to the SD version. dish also already has all the HD channels grouped in channels 9416-9513, so you can browse just those but you can still see all the SD channels on their regular numbers (like 110 or 236, etc) if you want.

go to your menu on your box and set your "home" channel to 200 or something. then, as soon as the TV comes on, it goes to 200 and you can go up from there..
but it only took me about a week to memorize the HD channels i watch the most. 211 is abc, 255 os wral, 250 is fox, 290 is espn, etc... 1/23/2010 11:08:59 AM |

i don't pay for the box, so i have to memorize where the digital channels are. every couple of weeks comcast will move everything around and i get to spend an hour playing "where the hell did they hide everthing this time? usually its in the middle of a random number ie. 38.5-38.20. this is especially annoying because you can't just skip past the first couple of dead channels and assume nothing is there. 1/23/2010 12:01:53 PM |

U-Verse I thought was clever. The SD and HD channels are identical, just add a 1 to get the HD channel. So, WRAL SD is channel 5, WRAL HD is channel 1005. Discovery SD is 120, Discovery HD is 1120. Easy to remember, anyway. It does punch a lot of holes in the channel numbers to make room for SD channels with no HD and vise-versa, but it is unnoticeable unless you look for it. 1/24/2010 2:08:42 AM |

on dish, wral in HD is 005-00. in SD it is also 005-00, so if you enter that in the remote it defaults to the HD channel. there's no way, afaik, to tune directly to a SD channel that also has a HD version. 1/24/2010 12:17:24 PM |
LoneSnark All American 12317 Posts user info edit post |
Interesting. What if you are trying to economize on DVR space by telling it to record the SD version of a program that only comes in 4x3 anyway? Can you do that? 1/24/2010 12:34:40 PM |

i gotta say i've perused the 200 section and its getting pretty crowded there i just set my favorites but its still a hassle to have to go thu 8 channels to find the right one HD button y'all, lets lobby for it 1/24/2010 1:00:27 PM |

^^^You just have to tune to the SD channel through the guide. But SD on an HD channel looks better than SD on an SD channel usually, plus with a DishDVR, you dont really need to conserve space...they actually give you a decent amount of HDD space (about 500GB...I think TWC DVRs have about 100GB?)
^I dunno, that HD button sounds like too much of a hassel. 1/24/2010 1:20:31 PM |

not a bad idea at all.
i am sure this has already been done, but not sure if it has been done for cable STB's (as opposed to satellite which i know little about, but after googling looks like some satellite stb's already have this).
if done automatically, it would require PSIP extensions between MSO and Digital STB (i'm assuming the functionality is not already there).
if done manually, user would configure SD/HD pairs in a menu on the STB which seems easy enough to implement.
i know some people at SciAtl and will ask them if this has come up or is already planned. 1/26/2010 2:51:41 AM |

another reason i like HD channels is dat 5.1 sound (where available). my receiver is all "check out my blue light on this channel" 1/26/2010 8:03:08 AM |

^^I'm sure most companies (TWC) wouldn't like this option or just scrapping SD channels that come in HD. They don't want to lose any channels (even repeats) so they can claim that they have so many channels and they want their Tv guides to have as many channels as well so that idiots think they have tons of channels 1/26/2010 8:41:19 AM |
