true story.

"Wayne County man dies in altercation with deputy
Posted: Today at 11:47 a.m.

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigation was called in Wednesday morning to investigate after a man died in an altercation with a Wayne County deputy, authorities said.
Deputy Martin McAlduff used a stun gun to subdue Joe Spruill Jr. during the incident, said Capt. Tom Effler of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
The incident began at about 5:30 a.m. when deputies responded to a report of a fight near the intersection of N.C. Highway 111 and Dollard Town Road, southeast of Goldsboro, Effler said. When McAlduff and Deputy Zachary Kinlaw arrived at the scene, they didn't see any evidence of a fight and searched the area.
The deputies found Spruill sitting on a porch on Thrasher Circle nearby and were escorting him to his Dollard Town Road home when he became unruly, Effler said. The deputies said Spruill began throwing things at them and resisted when they tried to take him into custody for disorderly conduct, Effler said, so McAlduff fired his stun gun.
One prong of the stun gun hit Spruill near the neck, and the second hit him in the back, Effler said. The deputies called EMS, which is standard protocol, he said, but while waiting for paramedics to arrive, they noticed Spruill was lying motionless on the road.
Paramedics declared Spruill dead at the scene.
Joe Spruill Sr. said his son had collapsed in late December and had been hospitalized for heart problems. He said his son was still on medication for his condition.
Jessica Spruill said her husband was well known in the area and that deputies knew he had a heart condition.
"They were very aware of the situation in reference to his health and what happened at Christmas," Jessica Spruill said. "They knew his heart was bad, and they (used a stun gun on) him anyway."
The younger Spruill is survived by a wife and four children.
McAlduff has been placed on administrative duty, pending the outcome of the SBI investigation. That is standard procedure when someone dies in an incident involving a law enforcement officer."

More deaths prolly occur from people taking aspirin. Here's an idea...if you have a bad heart maybe you shouldn't be fighting and throwing shit at police.

Dunno about anyone else but Id sure as hell rather get the stun gun than the mace.

They need to start firing every cop that uses a stun gun when it wasn't absolutely necessary. Otherwise, cops are going to continue to use them for fun. They should also require anyone issued a stun gun to be trained in CPR.

I'd like to know why they were escorting him home instead of just arresting him in the first place.

yep, this looks like another case where the cop didn't realize that stun guns can kill people pretty goddamn easily.
So much for using less than lethal force, eh?

10 years ago, cops didn't spray every mother fucker they arrested with pepper spray over and over again before they put the handcuffs on them.

Another fun fact. Stun guns can CAUSE heart stress / heart problems.

Also, remember that story not too long ago where the police officers insisted that the person they stunned was resisting arrest. Then the truth came out... the 'resisting arrest' was the movement of the person being stunned and convulsing on the ground....

I liked the story about the cop in San Fransisco that accidentally pulled his glock while reaching for his stun gun and fatally shot a person already laying face down on the ground.

it almost makes sense why people RUN FOR THEIR FUCKING LIVES when the police are chasing them with weapons that they don't have full control over. :-/

I'm more bothered by this statement. Overuse, by definition, should be considered a problem.

When I read threads like this I always hope you people aren't as barbaric as you let on. I tell myself you're just in an internet competition to see who can appear more ignorant and brutal.

I am lying to myself

EDW's are less-lethal. You can get hurt; this is a rare case. For this one incident there are probably thousands of solid, non lethal EDW discharges that happened today.

i dont see anything "barbaric" in this thread

I see people who support the police and recognize that it was a freak accident in a justifiable use of non-lethal force

and i see those that oppose the use of this force

in either case, i dont see any barbarism in the arguments

"

so i take it this guy is no stranger to running afoul of the law

cops are human, im sure they get sick of guys fuckin up repeatedly so he gets less wriggle room anyway

perhaps they used the stun gun anyway cuz the cat was resisting, we dont know this dude could be a 300 lb powerlifter or he could be a retard with retard strength

either way thats dangerous, he would need to be controlled with out risking injury in a hand to hand fight. Hell what if the cops beat his ass for 5 minutes to control him? surely thats less brutal than using a stun gun. the way i see it he gives up the consideration of his heart condition when he didnt calm his ass down.

police cant win in the eyes of the public

youre using adrenaline in the sense that its roids or somethin

yea im sure they were ramped up on adrenaline, what does that even mean?

unless they were sitting in the car injecting adrenaline into their veins before making the arrest

I mean, stop trivializing the event into a freak occurence. This shit happens all the goddamn time. It's well known that this "less than lethal force" weapon kills people.

Stop acting like people dont have rights, and deserve whatver is coming to them. Fact of the matter is that we all have a right to at least a trial. The police have no right to judge you in the street and execute you.

Which takes us to the weapon. This seems like it was an accident... which means the police shouldn't be using a weapon that they cannot control.
