Fallout: New Vegas announcement imminent

* By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot
* Posted Feb 3, 2010 7:28 pm PT

Bethesda twitters that tomorrow will yield new details on Obsidian Entertainment's unseen PC, PS3, and 360 spin-off of the iconic post-apocalyptic role-playing game.

The past few months have seen the Fallout franchise making headlines for being the subject of an increasingly acrimonious legal dispute. That will apparently change on Thursday, as Bethesda Softworks' official Twitter feed is urging fans to "Keep your eyes peeled for new stuff on #FalloutNewVegas tomorrow."

See above.

Tomorrow's revelations will be the first new information on Fallout: New Vegas since it was announced last April for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Due out this year, the post-apocalyptic role-playing game will not be a direct sequel to the critical and commercial hit Fallout 3, which was set in the ruins of Washington D.C. Instead, it will be set in the ruins of Las Vegas, which was flattened in the nuclear holocaust that preceded the original 1997 Fallout, set in Northern California. That game was a semi-sequel to the 1988 RPG Wasteland, which was partially set in Las Vegas.

Fallout: New Vegas will also see the license return to some of the developers which helped craft the first two Fallout games at Interplay. Using the Fallout 3 engine, it is being developed by RPG specialty studio Obsidian Entertainment, founded in 2003 by Feargus Urquhart and others from Interplay's now-shuttered Black Isle Studios. Obsidian's other projects include Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights 2 (and several expansions), the stillborn Aliens RPG, and the upcoming Alpha Protocol.

Ironically, Urquhart expressed skepticism when Bethesda licensed the rights to make Fallout games from a cash-strapped Interplay in 2004. Bethesda went on to buy the Fallout IP outright in 2007, leaving Interplay with only the rights to develop a massively multiplayer game based on the series.

Since then, the two companies' relationship soured over Interplay's marketing of the first three Fallout games as the "Fallout Trilogy" and Bethesda's claims that the Fallout MMORPG is not being developed as fast as agreed upon. In turn, Interplay has accused Bethesda of trying to seize the last sliver of the Fallout IP so it can develop its own game at its nascent MMORPG division. Like most inter-company disputes, the matter is now before a judge, who most recently ruled in Interplay's favor. "

I posted some extremely high-res photos (~10mb and 2000x3000) of the article in OXM that chock-full of exciting pictures and info about the game, so just click the link and check it out. After you open the album and click the picture you want to see, there is a magnifying glass next to the picture that will blow it up to its original size (after you blow it up it may be blurry for a sec). http://picasaweb.google.com/107356610149931892384/Untitled

Looking good.

I like that the nightkin are the color of the original super mutants.

I was actually hoping that all the super mutants would look more like fallout 1/2 versions, and that the east coast variety was just a different strain of FEV. No such luck

This is a fallout 1/2 mutant for reference

They are larger and less athletic looking than fallout 3 super mutants.

According to this Amazon page, the release date of the game is November 16th. I hope they come out with some type of pre-order bonus, and/or a unique special edition like they had with the Survival Edition for Fallout 3.

Fallout: New Vegas First Look
By Sophia Tong, GameSpotPosted May 4, 2010 8:25 am PT

The series makes its way back to its West Coast roots in Obsidian's upcoming postapocalyptic role-playing game.

There will definitely be gambling in Fallout: New Vegas. Whether or not the other wonders of Las Vegas--like buffets--will be included remains to be seen, but for now, we were assured that once you make your way to the strip, there will be a variety of ways to give up your hard-earned cash. At the Bethesda Gamers Day held in Las Vegas, Obsidian presented an hour-long demo of its upcoming role-playing game set in the dry and desolate Mojave Wasteland. Several members of the development team came from Black Isle Studios--the creators of Fallout and Fallout 2--so the game's story and setting will likely feel more familiar to those who had played the first two games.

Welcome to Goodsprings, where not much is happening…

Your character's introduction to the world is not a 16-year process that takes an hour. Unlike Fallout 3 where you start from birth, in Fallout: New Vegas, you begin the game as a courier who gets shot in the head over a package and is left to die in a shallow grave. Lucky for you--or else this would have been a very short game--you're rescued by a robot named Victor and then nursed back to health by Doc Mitchell. The rehabilitation process essentially acts as the character creation setup, where you can customize your looks and tweak them with an age slider. You'll also use a vitomatic vigor tester machine to determine your S.P.E.C.I.A.L stats. In a way that is similar to seeing a therapist, the doc gives you a personality test to determine your skills and define your character. He'll ask you questions like what comes to mind when you hear the word "dog" or "light," and the responses you give can be straightforward or slightly disturbing. For example, a couple of the optional responses for hearing the word "mother" included things like "cookie jar" and "human shield." Next, we were given several statements like "Conflict is not in my nature," and as with a survey, we had to select how much we agreed or disagreed. Our final test was a Rorschach test, where we picked the best answer to represent an ink blot that was displayed. The whole process took no more than five to 10 minutes, so after selecting barter, explosive, and gun skills for the purpose of the demo, the doc handed us a Pip-Boy to manage our status then told us to head toward the saloon.

At any point in the game, you can switch to Hardcore mode, which was added for those who want more of a challenge. In Fallout 3, you would heal instantly by using stimpaks, but with Hardcore mode in New Vegas, healing happens over time, so even if you use a stimpak, you'll have to seek out cover and wait a few seconds to recover. Similar to the radiation meter in the previous game, this time, you have a dehydration meter where you'll need to drink and hydrate, as well as eat certain types of food to offset negative status effects, which can eventually lead to death. Ammo will have weight, so you'll need to manage that accordingly. Project director Josh Sawyer mentioned that this is meant to provide more of a challenge, as well as immerse you into the world of Fallout.

The town we were in was based off the real ghost town of Goodsprings, which is a sleepy, deserted town that doesn't have much going for it other than the local saloon. For those who felt that Capital Wasteland was too bleak, New Vegas is a bit livelier--at least as lively as a barren desert can get. The Mojave Wasteland was spared from being leveled by a nuke, so there's some semblance of life when you walk past the welcoming Joshua trees and rolling tumbleweeds. Our first stop was to meet up with Sunny Smiles, a strong-willed young woman who will teach you the ropes on how to survive in the desert. Those who are familiar with Fallout 3 can easily skip the tutorial section of the game and just take off into the sunset, but for the purposes of the demo, we tagged along to help shoot some geckos that were messing with the town's water supply.

Pick your stats and be on your way. The whole process should only take a few minutes.

Using a varmint rifle, we watched several overgrown geckos' heads explode with a few quick shots. There's a kill cam that can be set, which slows down the final shot and makes your kills feel more cinematic, but this can be turned off if you don't like seeing limbs fly in slow motion. Sawyer said that geckos were a favorite from Fallout 2 and that there will be tougher versions to fire at later in the game. The core controls, as well as the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (VATS), remains mostly the same, and we later found out that special skill options have been added for melee attacks. Sawyer explained that there wasn't a lot of development time for New Vegas, and because a lot of people played Fallout 3, the developers didn't want to make any drastic changes--just improvements to the existing controls. He also said that aiming should be more responsive, reactive, and predictable. To discourage players from always aiming for the head, certain weapons will be more effective against limbs. At times, a red shield icon will appear to let you know that you're dealing less damage per shot and that it might be a good idea to switch targets to conserve precious bullets.

This worries me.

Both of Obsidian's previous major projects, KOTOR2 and NWN2, were rushed and unfinished, thus not nearly as good as they could have been.

Well it doesn't worry me too much since its not like they build and engine and textures from scratch. I think what he said can be translated into 'its not quite as original as 'we' at obsidian would like it to but if you loved Fallout 3 you're definitely gonna love this.'

I'm sure they have been working on the new Elder Scrolls since they finished Fallout 3. And I'm sure the graphics will be spectacular.

Same could be said of KOTOR 2, and they basically cut out half the game because they didn't get it done in time (but still left on the disc). There are some mods that basically finish up and restore the content.

Hell even when they were still Black Isle, there are huge parts of Fallout 2 that were cut out of the game unfinished. If you haven't tried it I recommend the Fallout 2 Restoration Project

Oh yeah, I have long been waiting to play the Restoration Project, and I decided my next playthrough will be with it.

"Bethesda gambles on an extravagant Collector's Edition for Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas, packed with poker chips, playing cards, and other exciting accouterments from the post-apocalyptic Sin City.

It's no lunch box and bubblehead, but it'll do in a pinch. The Fallout: New Vegas Collector's Edition comes packed with Vegas-themed goodies, from a set of "Lucky 7" poker chips representing the casinos of the New Vegas strip, to a custom set of playing cards, perfect for playing Caravan, a card game Obsidian invented specially for New Vegas.

You might want to keep the replica of the "Lucky 38" platinum chip away from prying eyes, but the hardcover graphic novel "All Roads," written by the game's creative director Avellone and created in conjunction with Dark Horse should be fine for sharing.

All this plus a making-of DVD, packed inside a box that looks as if it's newly recovered from beneath the desert sands.

"We're offering this very cool collector's edition to give fans the opportunity to own some of the items that they'll discover while playing Fallout: New Vegas," said Pete Hines, vice president of PR and marketing. "We are also expanding their experience with the game by including a top-notch graphic novel worthy of the Fallout name and a DVD that gives them a behind-the-scenes look at how the game was created."

The Fallout: New Vegas Collector's Edition will be available worldwide for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Retailers should begin accepting preorders shortly. Are you all in?"

1) It's nothing like any of those games. It's more like oblivion if you've played that. If not, it's more similar to say Bioshock or Deus Ex. It's an RPG.

2) The first 2 were released in 1997 and 1998, while they are my favorite games ever, playing them won't make you enjoy the new ones any more probably, they are isometric view turn based RPGs.

^same type of game but different story obviously. If open world RPGs aren't your thing I would stay away from Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

There is however a lot more depth to character customization and more RPG elements. Leveling system, classes, etc.

^ No not really. Getting XP, leveling up and making a character how you want them to be, and discovering different things make it WAY different. That said I'd just buy Fallout 3 non-GOTY edition and see if you like it, then buy DLC for it.

Its loosely similar in that:

Fallout: kill stuff -> XP + loot
RDR: kill stuff -> $$$ + loot

Fallout: Quests for XP and story development
RDR: 'Quests' for money and story development

Fallout: use XP to lvl up and acquire different skills (of course its more complex then that but just the basics here)
RDR: use $$$ to acquire better weapons and abilities

Fallout: customize your physical appearance, pick up outfits with bonuses etc
RDR: no physical appearance customization but there are outfits to acquire with bonuses

When you look at the big picture they are similar enough when asking if you hated one will you like the other? Unless your reason for not liking RDR was that it wasn't in depth enough and wasn't enough customization.

That said, they are not the same game.

I beat the RDR single player (most of it, still not to 100%) in roughly 2 days of gameplay

I have played Fallout for probably 10 days of single player, including going back and doing other choices...the "good character" choices versus the "bad character" choices are much more in depth than RDR...RDR you just get a bounty for being bad, and outlaws look at you as friends...I mean you get store discounts for being good and honorable, and other store discounts from being bad when shopkeepers fear you...really not much of a difference

Fallout is a lot more complex with the story decisions...early in the game you have a big choice to make which will affect where your first house is, if you have positive or negative (or neutral) karma, etc

RDR's problem is its way too short of a game imo...Fallout 3 is not...You can play Fallout 3 forever

Also, Dfshadow said he only played it for 15 minutes before regretting it. These are like 80 hours games and 15 minutes of gameplay is almost like not even breaking the plastic off of the package, and you can't even say you 'scratched the surface' in this amount of time. Games this long usually start of slow and don't pick up for at least a few hours. Also, RDR is limited in playthroughs (like one time for me and I don't care about 100%), were as a good RPG you can play quite a few time, as male or female (and get different perks perhaps for each sex) and build your character like you want to.

Thats just it though, if you don't have the attention span to play RDR, chances are you probably won't for Fallout.

I love both games but they're not for everyone.

I do sometimes get bored with these games when I get too side tracked with side quests and seems like its been forever since the story has progressed. But that is also part of the fun I guess.

fallout 3 was just not for me...i don't think i like sandbox type games

i loved the first few GTA games but got bored

i like fast paced action games, first/third person shooters, or JRPGs

i used to like everything i put in my game system but I guess when you get older you start to get jaded and learn to know what you like

I think it boils down to do you (as in general) want instant gratification, which could be due to short attention span or if you are a person that changes his mind/direction on a whim (maybe 'non-committal' so-to-speak), or do you like paths of logic that usually lead to gratification. You could be both, fall somewhere in between, or be neither and you just prefer games that don't leave much of a choice but to push forward and be involved in satisfying action. I think of myself of just playing a game for what it is, what I mean by that is I try not to compare any one to any other game, and if action comes, or not, it doesn't matter as long as I feel like I am working toward or partaking in something that stimulates me. For example, I could not like Diablo II, if I really compared the stimulation of it to the stimulation that I get from Fallout 3, or the stimulation that I get from Resident Evil 4 (which is my favorite game of all time). I just play. What comes or doesn't comes I will find out.

i think another factor is that i don't have all day to play games anymore

so playing fallout 3 for 1.5 hours is not very rewarding

i don't like going through multiple dialogue choices about how a character feels about another character when i could just be noob tubing someone online

Ah, I guess you make a good point for yourself, but if you really like a game and want to play it, no matter what else you do, you're going to find time to play, even if you can only play one game at a time, and for short periods of time.

true...i guess i do seek instant gratification

ok things i don't like about fallout 3

1. i really hate talking to most of the characters in town and listening to all the dialogue options
2. its too easy
3. the shooting is clunky / VATs is cool but that leads to #2
4. i do not like post apocalyptic themes / the graphics are DRAB
5. fallout 3 for ps3 sucks (bug and freezes), the frame rate blows but that might be for all systems
6. too many items to deal with
7. i did not find the main story particularly interesting and the side quests put me to sleep
