the collection of states obviously sucked. theres not much rational arguing for that but one could argue that federalization was inevitable and would have happened as time progressed. In the beggining, things were just too spread apart and having states was the most efficient way to do things but as technology improved it became a more fluid nation. Look at europe. Even they are federalizing now. Who would've thought?

You have to distinguish between "well known" and "good." The best presidents are the ones that no one knows about. They didn't do much of anything. They understood the bounds of their position and didn't cross them. Presidents like like Monroe, Hayes, Tyler, and Taylor were good presidents, but the average person on the street doesn't know a thing about them.

Most people can name about 15 of our past presidents, and they're going to assume that some that they know were the greatest. That's a bad assumption to make.

I disagree, most of the great ones are well known BECAUSE they were great. Theres a reason you see the mugs of lincoln, washington and FDR plastered everywhere across our country. Because they were our greatest presidents in our greatest times of need. I'm just going to assume youre joking with the inclusion of tyler though.

-He would only be President for one term.

He wanted the ex-slaves to move to Liberia after the Civil War was over. He couldn't have cared less about slavery, he just wanted the union to servive.

^^He did help to establish the national park system, so yes you can argue for him being a good president, but the best...I don't know. What some people don't about him is that he was a failed rancher in North (?) Dakota. He tried to raise cattle on some of the worst land in America for ranching.

thats not exactly secret knowledge, welcome to 11th grade us history class. lincolns clear object was preservation of the union. in the end he deemed freeing the slaves the best route to take in order to reach that goal.

^^Taft was one of the most over weight presidents ever. He stood up and then sat back down at a Yankees game during the 7th inning while he was president, so the whole stadium stood up since they thought he was leaving and then sat back down when he did.

I believe Lincoln was our greatest president. I took an entire course on this man (well, the title was Lincoln and the Union) by a great prof. at state, and I learned a lot about him. He went through tremendous struggles even from within his own administration, and still managed to hold this country together. His only fault as president, to me, was his believe that suspension of Habeas Corpus was a legitimate wartime means of protecting the Union.

Had he survived and was able to preside over the period of Reconstruction, this country would have turned out much differently I believe.

He is most well known for "freeing the slaves" but that is farthest from the truth. He did it as a means to help end the war, and the Emancipation Proclamation was only valid in the states currently in rebellion, which meant that Delaware, Maryland, and one other state that escapes me right now (maybe Kentucky) were still allowed to have slaves at the time of his proclamation.

Oh and he wrote 99% of his speeches and spoke to the public with no teleprompters
