Now playing in the Triangle at a theatre near you. Anyone catch it this weekend? I'm planning on going sometime this week.

8/10
*spoiler alert*
I was a little bothered by how easily Bad made up with the Colin Farrell character. The first 45 minutes of the movie made it seem like Farrell did something really fucked up, but was it a very big deal after all? Bad's early dive bar shows seemed entirely unnecessary after seeing how easily it was to turn things around after talking to Farrell.

Solid film. But overall I felt like it was a remarkable character in search of a story.
And just to be safe:
*spoiler alert*
I didn't find the relation between Bad and Jean very believable, nor his acute recovery. And I agree with Apocalypse in regards to Quote : | "...all the "ask me anything but that" type stuff." | with Tommy Sweet.

I need to go see this at some point. Bridges was giving off a crazy Waylon Jennings / Kris Kristofferson vibe in the previews 2/21/2010 9:29:57 PM |

Movie was extremely good, just finished watching it. Couple parts seemed to be kind of cliche, but still enjoyed the story of the down-trodden Bad Blake. 2/22/2010 10:46:58 PM |

I disagree with most of you who are lukewarm about this film. I thought it was great, easily a late contender for the best picture of the year. Seems like some of the complaints are stemming from the fact that the characters/storyline is somewhat familiar, and I understand that; but when it comes to genre exercises like this, you have to take them for what they are and meet them on their terms. It does what it does extremely well, and never comes off as campy or hokey to me, which is really difficult for a film that earnest. It is a very charming, unassuming, and honest flick.
As for the Maggie Gyllenhaal/Jeff Bridges relationship being far fetched, yeah, I could see that. But it's not exactly a deus ex machina. I found myself able to roll with the punches. The one thing I did think was pretty bad about the film was Maggie Gyllenhaal's performance. I usually like her, but her southern accent was inexcusably awful. 2/22/2010 11:29:17 PM |

I've seen it. I loved it. Thought it was one of Aronofsky's best. I liked Big Fan as well, from the guy who wrote The Wrestler. 2/23/2010 12:57:00 PM |

So i finally got around to seeing this last night and I have some of the same issues with this film after reading through this thread that some of you did. I felt that there should have been way more to the Tommy Sweet arc than just the "you backed out on the tour with me and burned me" problem and Bad's recovery from a lifetime of alcoholism was way too quick and painless to be believable. I would have rather this film be half an hour longer to really show the ups and downs and relapses that occur during a battle to overcome something like that. Instead they spent the entire film really bringing the viewer into Bad's constant decline, to the point where it hurt me to watch him in the mall scene, only to have him bounce back within 10 minutes clean and sober and wrap him up in a nice little bow. Great performance by Bridges but the story needed more.] 4/13/2011 9:07:15 AM |
