Why do we get so up in arms over anorexia and bulimia, but do nothing over obesity (essentially the polar opposite of those conditions), which is hundreds of times more prevalent and more deadly? 2/13/2010 12:54:46 PM |

Really? When someone is suspected as being anorexic, it is taken SUPER DUPER SERIOUSLY and they are rushed to get help.
Not that I'm saying it isn't serious, because it is, but there's a double standard. Nobody has an intervention for some guy eating 5 McDonalds cheeseburgers a day. 2/13/2010 12:59:07 PM |

but as far as i know none of them really cause mobility problems (i'm no doctor so feel free to correct that)
also, as a doctor, i think i'd be like "no, losing weight will help you with the diabetes/thyroid problem and every little bit helps, so park and walk"

How is obesity more deadly?
I get that it kills more people, but it's like saying cigarettes are more deadly than heroin.

In cases of any extreme body weight people are concerned about offending the person. It's a lot more common that people with eating disorders cover it well enough that no one ever notices, or that once they get help they find more secretive ways to relapse. Obese people are given help when their body weight negatively affects their health in a life threatening way (heart attack, for example) and anorexic/bulimic people are given help when it negatively affects their health in a life threatening way. It takes something extreme to make someone take notice.2/13/2010 1:17:18 PM |

you're acting like being fat precludes any other condition
specifically conditions that aren't obvious to the naked eye
I mean, of course it's not possible that someone could be fat and have any kind of "pulmonary or cardiovascular disability, arthritic condition, orthopedic or neurologic impairment"
Quote : | "G.S. 20-37.5 HANDICAPPED-definitions.-As used in this Article, handicapped shall mean: (1 ) any person who has an obvious physical disability that requires the use of a wheelchair, braces, walkers, or crutches, and those who have lost the use of one or both legs; or (2) any person who, as determined and certified by a physician, is severely restricted in mobility by a pulmonary or cardiovascular disability, arthritic condition, orthopedic or neurologic impairment; or (3) any person who is visually impaired as defined by G.S. 111-11, and certified by a licensed opthalmologist, optometrist, or the Division of Services for the Blind. Any person who falls within these definitions of handicapped shall be allowed to park for unlimited periods in parking zones restricted as to the length of time parking is permitted. This section shall have no application to those zones or during times in which the stopping, parking or standing of all vehicles is prohibited or which are reserved for special types of vehicles. (G.S. 20-37.6)" |

when you are carrying around 100+ extra pounds every day, day and night, its pretty easy to get arthritis or other conditions in the knees, ankles and feet. this can make it painful to walk, and makes it extra hard for those who need it most to get the exercise they need. 2/13/2010 1:34:20 PM |

I have no idea how they compiled this stat, but:

People get worked up over people with eating disorders because they care about the person (and because it's usually hot girls).
People get worked up over fat people, because their weight negatively impacts the people around them. How often has a skinny person crowded someone's seat on a bus, or airplane, or taken handicapped spots, or made it hard to get around their fat ass? People get annoyed with fat people. They care about their weight because it gets in OTHER people's way. 2/13/2010 1:48:18 PM |

fatties should have started exercising to begin with, I mean damn, it ain't hard to make some effort to eat right and live healthy.
unless you have some 'medical problem' that makes you fat, then, sucks for you, park your fat ass in the back.2/13/2010 2:34:39 PM |

so if you have a handicapped placard, you can park in, say, 1 hour spaces... for as long as you want?!2/13/2010 2:56:22 PM |

do you really want them to waddle down the middle of the entire parking lot entrance at 0.3 miles per hour. At least handicap stickers allow them to only clog up the first 50 feet of the parking lot and not interfere with any more vehicular traffic than necessary.
either that, or they'll sit in their car blocking up traffic until a parking space near the front opens up. 2/13/2010 3:02:14 PM |

evan, about the time-limited spots, if you have the handicap placard, you can park in a time-limited spot for as long as you want for free (regardless of the rules/law).
However, businesses in Raleigh have complained that there are way too many placarded cars hogging the spots all day. So they're going to be making some changes:
