Also, (and without upping the charge to actual murder,) the penalties for drunk driving fatalities should be massively increased. It shouldn't be a murder charge in order to do this, though, because it's not murder. If you kill someone while drunk driving, you should face a minimum of 25 years in jail. Period.

ok I didn't have time to read every post yet, but here's the story so far.

The girl was arrested, drunk or high on something - my guess is the ladder.

I do have renters insurance - so lukily I'm gonna get paid for this, but my collectibles are doneso

the drawback is that my house is now 8" off the foundation so I will have to be relocated for 2-6 months, whcih means stay in an extended stay hotel, or live with my parents again (first time in 6 years) in North Raleigh and drive 40 minutes each way to school/work daily.

this sucks plus I have a ton of glass in my feet from when I ran - initially I thoguht the US was being bombed or something, there were no breaking sounds or anything, just BOOM!!! and the whole house swayed.

turns out that the air conditioning unit behind where I was sitting prevented the car from breaking all the way through the wall, and probably saved my life or at least serious injury

basically today I have to get all my clothes, books, etc. out of there - then insurance people are coming tomorrow am to see what they call "salvagable" and pack it all up - everything else I get to put a price on and get paid for - and if I think it's salvagable - like my couches with glass shards - and i can clean it- i can keep it.

Make sure the price they're asking you to assign* is the cost to replace, and not any other kind of "value".

*: when I used to buy renter's insurance, they just asked me to come up with a value of everything I own, and I was insured for the amount it would cost to replace all my stuff. Then, in the event of a claim, beyond a certain point, they'd just cut a check to me for the cost I'd estimated to replace everything, and then they'd help with lodging. But this was with USAA, and they're very well-known for being beyond awesome, easy to worth with, and taking good care of their customers.

If you can, be there with the insurance people while they're doing their job: remember that it's their job to look out for their employer's bottom line, more than it is to help you through this. Don't be afraid to speak up for yourself. I do hope you're with an awesome company

the hole where she hit - that window right there - the couch I was sitting on was backed up to that wall - the a/c unit saved my life

oh - and all the broken beer bottles is not because I'm a bum, I brew beer and I've collected over 200 bottles since I was a freshmen in college - so 6 years - and now they are all broken and irreplaceable. I also collect glasses from beer festivals and they're broken as well as neons

for him it's actually a blessing in disguise. the house is really old and had a crack in the foundation to begin with, so now his insurance will cover that. supposidly I can move back in in 2-3 months but there's so much termite damage and water damage that I've seen that I don't think the city will let me live there when it gets inspected, they'll have to fix that first so my guss is ~6 months.
