If you live near Apex, my cat jumped out of the wagon at Petsmart in Apex on Hwy 55. Please spare me the "what the hell did you bring to Petsmart for" I'm already beating myself up enough. We think he's probably still around there somewhere. The store is about 7 miles from my house so we don't think he'll make it home on his own. There is a $300 reward if he is returned safely. He's microchipped but not wearing a collar. Here's a picture of him. His name is Bunsen.

Yeah, I checked them. I have handed out flyers to the businesses and houses near the Petsmart. I go there at least once a day (usually when it's dark and quiet) to try to find him. I was thinking about a humane trap but I don't know where I would set it. I have the next couple of days off so I'm going to ask people if I can look around their yards. Is that weird? I just want to bring him home

You might want to check the drainage ditches around the roads in the areas as well. I know that:s where my old cat liked to hide back in the day.

I've seen a cat hanging around an apartment complex on Cornwallis Rd. (.5 mi from Hwy 55) that looks a lot like that picture. But I saw him on Sunday, and had never seen him before. I thought he belonged to someone who lived in the area - people keep outside cats around here, without fences. He was definitely pampered and indoorsy-looking. That's why I assumed he wasn't lost. He was real friendly and not scared of me at all.

Is it possible he got that far, and was he missing on Sunday afternoon?

what do you mean by "wagon?" The shopping cart, your car, a little red wagon you were pulling?

^ yes, a shopping cart

^^^ it might be possible he got that far, but i don't think it's likely. he's been missing since saturday afternoon. he is a pretty friendly cat, but i'm not sure if he would be super friendly to a stranger just yet. if you see it again, please let me know or DM me with apartment complex-- i'll look around there

haha and i thought calling them buggies was weird. i've never heard them referred to as wagons.

seriously though, if he likes food at all, set some traps. i know here in rocky mount you can borrow them from animal control. check into that, or a rescue group might let you use one.

I'd think that there would be enough outside cats running around that any traps you set might just catch one of them instead.

I have a couple of friends that work around the Petsmart in Apex so Ill ask them to keep an eye out. The microchip gives you a good chance of getting him back...good luck

this sucks but i have some advice: print out easy to read lost cat signs and staple them to light poles. i found my animal this way after a couple of days. Don't list too much info as someone whizzing by should digest the basics: $300 reward, your name and number, where he got loose, and his photo of course. Tape a few to stop signs leading in/out of nearby residential areas. good luck

Ur cat knows how to make it home but 7 miles just going to take a while. The most likely thing that is going to happen is she going to get tired and hungry and she going to find a new family and be happy and healthy somewhere else. A friendly domesticated cat isn't going to have any trouble finding a home. You are nothing but a meal ticket to that cat, they don't even have the neurological ability to form attachments. I know it's popular but I don't think it's socially healthy for ppl to get that attached to animals. That money u spending on a cat is a years salary to like half the ppl on the planet. All things in moderation: have a cat if u want but $300 buys alot of pencils and crayons.

^^^Thankfully, I have enough pencils and crayons so I can spend the money on a reward for my lost cat. If someone tries to adopt my cat, hopefully they will take it to a vet and they'll figure out he has a microchip. Most likely he's hiding somewhere because he's scared.

Thanks for your uplifting and constructive help, though. I'll be sure to tell the millions of pet owners in America not to get attached to their animals so that others won't have to be worried and upset like me.

^^thanks

That attachment u feeling toward a cat is not SOCIALLY healthy. How is it fair for u to spend 100's of dollars on a cat when there are human beings needing basic services like clean water? How much u think a iron hand pump and a well drilling cost? about $300. And when I talking about crayons, it a metaphor for spending money on services for human beings. I not expecting u to go join peace corp, like I said everything in moderation. Ur cat going to be just fine, every cat my family has ever had has been one that invited itself in off the street after it got lost out of some bodys car at a rest stop or pet store. U want to be responsible, take that $300 and give it to a no-kill shelter so some poor family has a chance to get their cat back. or even better, give it to United Way. Or save it for future college money or something, ppl like u gonna 2.4 kids right? It's insane how ppl spend money on pets in this country. U think just because millions of ppl do it it ok? How many adorable little birds ur cat killed this year? How many horses have to be slaughtered to make pet food. How many human being got to be slaves at teh Walmarts to sell u Paul Newman cat foods costing TRILLIONS of taxpayer dollars in Welfare subsidies so ppl like u can have cats and dogs? Ok I getting ridiculous now, it just irritates me.

I agree with everything jcgolden said. And I own a cat. Owning a cat really is a dick move on my part. It annihilates native species. It wastes money, fuel and badly needed resources to feed it.

I do believe it's capable of forming social bonds, however simple and opportunistic. That said, it has found its meal ticket elsewhere on many occasions when I'm not around.

Don't worry about food or temperature. Anything above 0 degrees F is A-OK. Being of northern european descent, they probably prefer it.

if ur out searching for him, maybe u could take something that make a unique sound he will recognize. I know when my cats r hungry, the will come sprinting from afar to the sound pulling into the driveway. Not sure if this will work away from home tho. Maybe u could take his food bowl with you and repeatedly "put it on the floor". maybe the vet could give u suggestions. The range of the food bowl sound is prolly going to be alot greater than you think, their hearing is very good. I just wonder if he'll come out of hiding over it.

can u borrow a good sniffing dog that likes to bark at cats? searching with a bloodhound would significantly increase ur effectiveness. might scare the cats but at least he might see her then u can tie him off and give chase. If ur going to make signs, I recommend u suggest ppl shine a flashlight under their house because scared cats love to go under patios decks and stuff. actually I think that last idea is the most effective.

Yes, I have a "dinner bell" sound that is unique. Mine will come running from up to two blocks away(if it's hungry and doesn't have anything better to do, of course). I chose my sound because I sound like a bloody fag screaming "here kitty kitty" and wanted to avoid that. You could just use your voice I suppose.

There's apparently some dumb app for the iPod that is a bunch of sounds like a lion roaring, a cat meowing, a can of food being opened, etc. My friend played it for my cats the other might and they were like OMGOMGOMG WHERE IS IT OMGOMGOMG.

So maybe you could download that and play the can of food sound over and over

check the dumpsters behind petsmart....I know they throw away alot of cat food so maybe he is getting food from there....you might be able to set a trap there but not sure how effective it will be (since there is food all around).

^ wagon cracks me up...ive heard buggy down here but never wagon.

He's such a cute kitty.

I've known some people to start facebook groups for lost pets, with a picture of them, and invite all their friends in the area to the group, with instructions in the group for everyone to invite their friends. Using social networking to reach out to people you don't know but who live in a given area. If you do make such a group, post it here, I'm sure plenty of tdubbers know people who live in the Apex area.

And google all the vets in the area and take flyers to them too if you haven't already. I saw you said area businesses. But when I worked at a vet clinic, random people would bring random pets that they found from 20 miles away, just because they happened to be familiar with our location even though there were several closer vets. Not everyone thinks to take them to the closest shelter.

Some microchip companies have amber alerts for pets. If you haven't already, report your pet missing to your microchip company, and if they are one that does this, they'll be able to send out a flyer and description of your pet with your phone number too many shelters, vets, and pet related stores in like a 30 mile radius.

It looks like tonight is going to be the warmest night this week so he should be alright.

"he always comes running when i open a can of food. would it be ridiculous to walk around opening cans of food for him? thanks for the advice"

I'd bring at least can or two with you, so if you saw him hiding somewhere but he was scared, you could entice him out with the sound & food. Maybe get a few friends or family members armed with a can or two as well.

Good luck finding your kitty!

Obvious question, but I don't see it anywhere...

Have you returned to the Petsmart and asked if they have found any strays?

Also I would ask if you could put your flyers up in their store; maybe at the registers. People that go to that store are an ideal 'target audience' and are more likely to try to return a stray that looks lost than some random teenager rolling through a stop sign.

i wouldn't worry about temps, especially with all that hair. i have a very (naturally, he's part siamese) skinny cat, with short hair, who stays out 24/7. including the last several weeks when it's dropped down to the low 20s. he's fine.

when my other cat went missing we did the facebook thing too.

good idea about calling the microchip company

thanks for all the help! i called the microchip company on saturday and put out a pet amber alert. i have been checking petsmart and the restaurants around there every day. i've been putting up signs, calling and going to vets offices and shelters. i'm going to try the facebook group. it's good to know he'll be okay, even in the cold. he's kind of chunky and very fluffy.
