2005 maxima
i was changing out my rear lug nuts and to do so i had to take off the brakes/calipers/rotors - i reassembled everything and when done rolled the car ~6 feet and heard what sounded like glass breaking but it appears instead it was metal on metal perhaps instead
it happened on both the left and right side - after i was done i noticed the scraping sound and when i removed everything again it seems i had a new extra part - what is this part and should i get a ride to work in the morning? i have the full repair manual and i can't seem to find this part - i thought it may be the pad retainer but it's not
any ideas? 2/24/2010 1:26:02 AM |

Aren't those just the clips that hold the pads in place?

i think those metal clips in the picture you posted are the pad retainers and those are in place currently - i could be wrong tho 2/24/2010 1:34:42 AM |

everyone i've showed the part to this morning has remarked how clean it is and that it may be a clip that holds the brake line or something else in place - still can't find a picture of it or any reference to it online 2/24/2010 10:00:50 AM |

so you were putting lug "studs" on right.
first off what happend to make you need to change them? the damn thing isnt but 4-5 years old
there is no doubt in my mind that it is the pad retainer. its the only thing alldata shows that looks anything like that

i was replacing them with longer ones because i added a 5mm spacer on all 4 wheels
i'll have to take a picture of the brakes to show you that the metal piece pictured above is in fact in place
i had to hammer pretty hard to free the old lug studs (i incorrectly said nuts earlier) - i'm guessing while hammering this part was knocked loose perhaps]] 2/24/2010 10:33:43 AM |

when i changed my pads and rotors on my 99, i dont remember seeing anything in that shape. unless you ran them over and they got all bent up in the picture. Is that the original shape of those pieces?
they arent the brake line retaining clips either
Actually my pad retainers got really fucking dirty when i took them off, to the point that there was no way i could mistake them for new ones. 2/24/2010 10:40:46 AM |

no part #
the shape of the 2 pieces is very similar although both are slightly warped - i have to imagine they are in the original shape for the most part
here are additional pictures

Ive done brakes on my G35 several times. They have basically the same braking system as the maxima. I have never seen those things.. they look clean, no brake dust, no road salt, etc... I think its the brake line clip, or abs sensor clips.
does the car drive? 2/24/2010 11:13:03 AM |

drove it to work (6 miles) with the heat and radio off listening for anything weird and heard nothing out of the ordinary - car drives great 2/24/2010 11:25:24 AM |

i'm guessing it's just some random clip that holds something in place that i'll find out about once the thing it was holding is messed up 2/25/2010 10:11:50 AM |

follow the brake line untill you cant see it anymore. if it was a line clip, there will be a "cleaner" piece of line. if not, then it wasnt 2/25/2010 10:28:30 AM |
