I'm looking to get a 1993 Ford Lightning with only 56k miles on it. Amazing condition with no mechanical or cosmetic issues at all. I haven't read of any issues with this type of truck.

Any reason I shouldn't get it?

Edit: Yes I know I screwed up the title.

The only reason I know of is that damned E4OD tranny for that particular year can be somewhat troublesome.

I had a friend who had a '93...and the transmission shit the bed in Tennessee. Had to have it towed all the way back to Clayton.

I had a '93 work van with the E4OD...and that bastard used to drop right out of gear every now and then going down the highway...and then catch with a THUD that would snap your neck.

Come on, y'all are just jealous.

I say congrats and nice purchase. I've always liked the 1st gen lightnings with the good old 351 better than any of the newer ones (though the blown 5.4 is nice...)

As if a 90's F150 is such a terrible thing. I guess that's why it has consistently been the best selling pickup truck in America.

And Ford put a lot into making this truck outhandle pretty much any truck built before it. While it might be a little dated now it was way ahead of it's time in 1993. It's not just an F-150 with a plastic trim package and 17s.

Nah...The Lightning was aiming at the Syclone and I'm pretty sure they killed it in the handling department. It wouldn't beat it in a straight line, but it was also about 2/3 the price ($20k vs $30k). That left plenty of cash to make the 351 sing if you wanted to make it fast.

Seems like it would be easier to make a lighter, shorter wheelbase AWD vehicle handle than a RWD full-size pickup, Just sayin', I could be wrong.

^^Yes, because a Miata is sooo much like a full-size truck. We're talking about two truck-based vehicles here, neither one is a damn sports car. I think my question is still valid.

Okay, this is what I found:
GMC Syclone (C/D Sept 1991)
MSRP: $25,970
280hp / 350lb-ft
0-60 - 5.3
1/4 mile - 14.1 @ 93mph
braking 70-0 - 183 ft
skidpad - 0.80
curb weight - 3600lbs

Ford Lightning (C/D July 1993)
MSRP: $19,523
240hp / 340lb-ft
0-60 - 7.2
1/4 mile - 15.8 @ 86mph
braking - 184 ft
skidpad - 0.90 g
lane change maneuver 55.3 mph
curb weight - 4480lbs

As we already knew, the Syclone smokes the Lightning in a straight line. Looks like the Lightning has more grip however given it weighs almost 900 lbs more I doubt it's as maneuverable as the Syclone. Of significance is the Syclone's considerably more expensive base price...

Quite interesting that the Syclone smoked the Ferrari 348 it was compared against in everything except skidpad grip, 0-120 mph, and top speed. It even beat the Ferrari in braking
