Help me understand this. She told the school she was going with a girl and wearing a tux. The school says no. She calls the ACLU and they go to court. The school cancels the prom for everyone. that about right?

While it sucks for her, I feel worse for the rest of the students. Just show up alone and have your GF do the same.

I think the reason they cancelled the prom is basically because they didn't want to get sued, and they didn't want to fight in court. They may have still thought their stance was right, but didn't have the funds or inclination to test it in court.

I don't agree with the school system perspective, but this may also be an issue that is better dealt with over the course of several months of discussion and mediation, instead of forcing both sides to work it out and be happy in the deadline leading up to prom. This solution, while not ideal, may end up being better in the long run for all sides, because it gives them more time to find common ground.

(And I think we all know that this would have been the BEST PROM EVER! If my prom had lesbians, I probably would have remembered it much more fondly.)

I mean, the 16/17 year old girls can bring their 22 year old boyfriend (who we all know is going to slam their pussy after or during the prom), and a girl or boy cannot bring a member of the same sex with them?

That is fucking stupid.

What does the school care if a girl brings her girlfriend or a guy brings his boyfriend? If it bothers you that much, don't look at them. If you're going to let them bother your night, then it's YOU who has the issue, not them. What is the school afraid of? A homophobic father/mother not allowing their "darling" little whore go to the prom with their 22 year old boyfriend?

It seems to me that the school needs to get their priorities straight.

For the Mississippi high school I read that the school board is encouraging members of the community to organize a private prom so that they can exclude the gay couple with no legal worries. In response there is now an effort to raise money for a gay inclusive prom. Unfortunately this seems to be a growing trend of gay people having to have separate proms.

Growing up in rural NC, long before I was out of the closest, when there were few openly gay people at my high school, I was friends with all kinds of closed-minded people to put it lightly. One day I was even invited in on the plans of a group of guys who were getting together to plan an attack/stabbing on one gay guy if he did end up bringing a date to prom.

I agree with cynosural that they did the right thing.

Obviously, the especially right thing to do is not to have a policy at all.

But if an ultraconservative administration has put the policy in place, schools should cancel the prom every year.

Just say, "Sorry, folks, we can't have a prom because our prom policy is discriminatory, and we don't want to risk a lawsuit and media circus. The only way we can ever have a prom again is if we change the policy."

If people want to organize a private prom, that's their business. They best not be thinking they gonna sell tickets and promote that shit on campus.

kicking your child out of the house basically says that you don't accept their choices, and aren't going to. in some cases i can see that as being the right option, but with something like this, it just tells the world that you are a bigot.

it sucks, but i'm sure the kid is better off outside of a home environment that is negative towards his sexual perspective.

Now I know this thread is all about the 'rabble, rabble, society is bad', but might you maybe consider that the other students did not exclude her from the private prom because of her lifestyle choices?
Perhaps it was because her little tirade got their original prom canceled. Or that she took the last group of people trying to organize a prom to court.

Just saying. Getting your school prom cancelled is effectively a social kamikaze.
