Vandenberg got his Twitter back, and then answered the question we all have have been wondering.

Kinda "meh" game from Vandy, but he stepped up nice in overtime. Would like a .gif of him blockslamming Miller. Too bad we let them score right after that.

Vandy had another beautiful hook yesterday that hit nothing but net. Sooner or later people are gonna realize that Vandy has legit post moves and great touch around the basket. Hopefully we start using him more in the low post, because he can get his shot off anytime he wants and he hits 75%.

Defying all probability, Vandy was smart enough to adjust to the dump pass they were throwing Miller. He moved behind Miller and they threw him the ball. Vandenclutch

^^^ I'd say a little better than meh. He had some really nice passes (3 assists) and screens, and 2 blocks, but didn't make much noise on the boards or score much.

He wouldn't hit 75% if he actually started shooting out of the post more. I'd rather him focus more on rebounding...which is where we need him. He's not abysmal in the post...but he's not near as good as what you're thinking.

I think he should take at least 2-3 low post shots per game. His shots won't get blocked, and if the defense actually has to take his offensive game semi-seriously, it could open up things for other players.

he is absolutely unable to use his size to his advantage while on offense

he's never has been able to. I doubt it'll click for him over the next few weeks

It looks to me like he's just scared to do it, and has been told by the coaches that when he gets the ball he should always just look to pass. But when he is assertive, he makes some surprising buckets for us.

doesn't the term "surprising buckets" kind of sum him up in a nutshell, though?

All Vandenberg is doing is stealing valuable minutes from guys who can help us next year. This year is never going to amount to anything more than an NIT bid, time to start playing the freshmen even more and start figuring out our best rotation for next season.

^^Dude don't become the next Earl. Get that shit out of here.

There's no way Anya manages playing all of Vandy's minutes this year, he's just not go the chops for it. Vandy is doing a great job playing defense, getting blocks, assisting on offense, and occasionally slamming down the monster putback.

He's providing useful minutes. He's not as good as he could be right now if Gott was his coach all four years, but he's serviceable.

I really don't understand this post. Vandy clearly has the best touch around the basket of anyone on the team not named TJ Warren. There are a lot of things to criticize Vandy for, but the guy is hitting 75%. When he throws the ball at the hoop, it goes in 3 out of 4 times. Ball don't lie.

tl;dr: more Vandenhooks

It's the rebounding that will always kill me. Just grab the ball. No need to spike that shit out of bounds.

the mental gymnastics some will do to try and make it seem as if he's good is baffling to me

I'm glad he's there to take up some minutes and occasionally space on the floor (when he's not horrifically out of place), but that's about it.

it's ok to admit that he isn't good at basketball

it's funny to me that wolfpack fans will take time to post on a wolfpack message board how one of our essential players isn't good at basketball. it's baffling to me.

(and in case you couldn't tell, my list of stats and my definition of "meh" wasn't serious)

But he has a higher rb40 than tj warren and several of the other top10 rebounders in the conference, he's tied for 3rd in the ACC in blocks (despite playing less games and less minutes than most of the others). but yeah, he totally "isn't good at basketball".

he's a liability on both ends of the floor, consistently looks lost and out of position, has no rebounding ability, has zero post moves, has awful hand/eye coordination, our team looks better with him on the bench and Anya in his place, etc...

he's there to eat minutes and anything positive he does while in is a huge positive, but that doesn't make him good

[Edited on January 28, 2014 at 12:58 PM. Reason : this doesn't make him a bad person like some are acting like. he just doesn't have the talent ]

not sure how he can have no rebounding ability, yet have a higher rb40 than our leading rebounder and a lot of the top rebounders in the conference, and have awful hand/eye coordination yet be tied for 3rd in the conference in blocks, despite playing less minutes and games than most of those ahead of him. but i respect your opinion.

watched every game

if you were a fan of another team and were seeing him for the first time with no knowledge of him whatsoever, you'd think, "man, they must be super thin at the 5 if he's getting these minutes".

Depends completely on which game you watched. If you saw him in the Virginia or Missouri games you might say "this guy fucking sucks". If you saw him in the Northwestern or ECU games you might say "wow this is one of the best bigs in the ACC"

i'm not dumb enough to attribute broad sweeping statements to his entire season/career

it just went there for some reason
