RIP Elmore Leonard

http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/20/showbiz/elmore-leonard-obit/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Quote :
"(CNN) -- Elmore Leonard, a legendary crime novelist and screenwriter who wielded sharp prose and created quirky misfit characters to captivate a legion of readers has died, his literary agent said Tuesday.
The 87-year-old writer, who had been recovering from a stroke, wrote novels in the crime and western genres, short stories and screenplays.
He recently won a lifetime achievement award from the National Book Foundation.
"For a half-century, Elmore Leonard has produced vibrant literary work with an inimitable writing style," the foundation's executive director Harold Augenbraum said."

Got Amazon Prime a few weeks back and just finished watching the 4th season online. Probably one of my top 3 shows on TV right now. Addicting as hell.

I picked this show up after last season, or at least near the end of it, and watched all of it non-stop without having to wait for new episodes or seasons

It is by far my favorite show on TV and I can't tell you how ridiculous I feel about how much I've been anticipating this season. Like, I've thought about it often since I watched the last episode

Anyone else's dvr mess up on the recording schedule tonight? My guide was showing like 3 different blocks of justified between 10-12. Looks like I won't be watching until tomorrow now.

Good episode. The first episodes are not always the best of the season, but they do a good job of setting up the season.

I'm sure there will be some twists along the way. I was surprised how many people were offed in the first episode.

I was surprised by one particular person being moved to prominence at the end of last season and then suddenly killed off at this beginning of this season. This season had better have a healthy does of Elston Limehouse though...

I hadn't seen him in anything either... Based on his appearance, I thought he was going to have a deeper accent... it was more high-pitched awkward than what I expected...

but ehh....it'll grow on me i'm sure

Michael Rappaport is what he is. I was less bothered by him than I was by the pure cartoon that was his brother Dilly. And i'm surprised when people say they've never seen him in anything. He's all over the place. Have you not seen Higher Learning?

I've seen him in plenty

I was saying IF I hadn't seen him anything, he would still sound weird trying to pull off that accent

I will always endorse more Dewey Crow, he's made me laugh since S1E1.

list of things Dewey Crowe hates:

Cole Slaw
Fatties
Not having 4 kidneys

and I was definitely expecting Rappaport to be a part of one of the northern mafioso, not a Southern Crowe. the accent is awful...but it goes against his typical character, so I'm interested to see how they flesh out his character.

and uh oh, looks like Raylan is gonna get busted by Art for working with the mob

^Really mixed on that. On the one hand I want it to go forever. On the other I would rather them have a set finale and stop the show before they get bored of it and are just doing it for the paycheck. Just glad they didn't cancel it effective this season.

I have no problem with the "six seasons and a movie" approach, it keeps us from getting into another Simpsons situation where a great show becomes garbage due to being on tv for too long.

Sucks to think the end is in a little more than a year, but 6 seasons is a great run. Happy to see they're that focused on making sure the quality of the show never dips.

I'm looking forward to the first Boyd / Rapaport meeting

Also looks like a Boyd / Raylan scene next week which is always great

What are the chances this series ends next year with Raylan shooting Boyd in the heart?

I wonder if in season 6 Raylan and Rachel will finally get down?

Not sure about the Boyd thing though...they dug coal together.

The original short story ends with Boyd dead if I recall correctly, not left alive as per the pilot

correct, originally Boyd was never supposed to make it out of the pilot. It's all but certain that the central conflict of the last season will be Boyd and Raylan.

great episode. somehow wiping the slate clean from loose ends while adding another whole batch of problems. Boyd over Lee Paxton in the beginning was haunting. The Johnny double-double cross against the guy from K&B construction, Art being a badass again, Wash going ham with the assault rifle, and finally Jean Baptiste getting blown away. That was probably surprise of the night, even more so than Theo Tonin getting caught. From all the threatening undertones between Raylan and JB i thought for sure they were headed for a showdown in the end.

glad I'm not the only person that remembers him for that

this shit is as cold as the "Ezekiel 25:17" line from Pulp Fiction:

Quote :
"Now word's 'gun burn through these hills and hollers like a wildfire. People of Harlan County, rich and poor, will marvel at your debasement and venality. They will spit venom when they speak your name. And they will take your suicide as the last act of a coward. Now your reputation is ruined, your good word worthless, but death will not be the end of your suffering. For generations your children, and your children's children will have a mark against their name, and that will be your legacy. "

That was an AA-12 automatic shotgun, BTW...

If you read the interview with the producer on EW, they explain the surprise with Jean Baptiste. Something about planning on him going til the end of the season but the actor wasn't enjoying it or something like that

That seems to have been a major feature of the show. There are always 100 ways the plot could go and then mid season it clears up a bunch and goes off in some new directions.
