is it a direct deposit, or do you get a physical check


if direct deposit i wouldn't mention it...if they catch it just say you didn't know about it

although you've told the entire internet about it now

I once recieved double the amount I should have for travel. I reported it and it really seemed to upset the accounting folks. I'd go ahead and tell them.

Grounds for termination because of the paycheck? No.
Grounds for termination because of the paycheck + something else? Maybe.
Probably something you should mention if you want to remain on favorable terms with your employer? Yes.

If something is screwball, ask about it. Sometimes it will be error in your favor, sometimes it will be correct in your favor, sometimes it won't. Don't assume you have the money right now until you verify it is in your favor.

(True story: When I showed up to close on my house, I only owed 1% (closing costs). I said ... ummm ... shouldn't it be 10%, you miss a percentage sign somewhere? They gave a fairly detailed explanation which made sense, and boiled down to the 1% was correct. Still, ASK first).

I wouldnt spend it either, but overdrafting shouldnt be a problem unless you keep your checking account balance razor thin...

A couple weeks ago my commission check was $350 to high. I figured it would be best to tell my boss rather than spending it, because I didn't want to spend it only to have to pay it back. I told my boss and he told me to just keep it.

So I suggest telling them.

Payroll errors at my husband's workplace have always been caught on their own and then corrected in a following paycheck. Don't be surprised when you get a paycheck later on that is $200 less than what you expected.

It happens occasionally at his job and no one that we know of has ever been fired over not mentioning it.

I learned this the hard way. I quit a job and was only due 1 final weeks pay. I got that, and then 2 weeks later had another check direct deposited. Like a dumbass I spent it, and the next week they reversed the deposit. My checking account was like $600 overdrawn. Dumb move on my part.

After my coop ended I kept receiving regular deposits for MONTHS. Even after I let HR know it kept happening.... we're talking many thousands of dollars

I still wonder when they would have caught it, if ever, if I hadn't told them repeatedly.

Better safe than sorry dude. I've had that happen a few times before and it turned out to be a bonus or a monetary award that my boss just hadn't had time to tell me about.

I had this happen in one of my Merrill Lynch stock accounts. Somehow last month there was a 6000 dollar deposit. It wasn't me and there was no other information other than the deposit date. I can only imagine it will be rectified on its own next month, but part of me wanted to pull everything out while i had the chance

^I seriously doubt he will give a shit about the honesty, but you definitely report it. A co-worker of mine said nothing for about 10 months and they caught onto it at the end of the year. He went to his bank account to find that $1200 had been removed from his account.

He said it was a check. There is no possibility for them to take it out of his bank account if he doesnt do direct deposit. There is the possibility of them correcting it on a future paycheck, however.

Its $200. Its not worth the worry. Just tell them.

This guy I used to work with once received a raise when he moved into a new position. After they upped his pay they accidentally put in the annual salary as his hourly rate. His paycheck that period was over $1M. He called payroll a few times and they finally took the money back, only to do the same thing again the next pay period.

If it were direct deposit, depending on how long it took them to catch the error, who would get to keep the interest? That could have easily been 100 bucks a day.

Is this like a $10/hr job? If so and you think the $200 is worth more than the job, then wait for them to find their error. If not and you value this job, give it back and trick your boss into thinking you actually have some integrity.

I'm a salaried employee (and we do hire contract hourly employees as well so there is a distinction) but I technically get paid by the hour. Basically all that means is I get paid extra/OT for hours worked beyond the 40 hours a week my salary number is based on which is sweet.

Depends on the industry.
