I really hope Google's Samus is an updated Pixel but with a lower price. The highest chromebooks from manufacturers are $300-400 and you're gonna take it to the next level by $1k?!

They should really aim for a $600-800 chromebook

It's served as nothing but a battery drain because it's switched on all time by apps that shouldn't need it. The integrated GPU is pretty good, and this thing isn't a gaming machine anyway. It is however, an excellent Steam In-Home Streaming client, and the integrated GPU has hardware video decoding anyway."

One of my coworkers in design got one of these babies... $2400.

The Dell XPS with very similar specs (slightly higher resolution screen) is also $2400. Apple is competitive these days as far as pricing goes. That's about the asking price for most laptops with similar specs.

Im looking into something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834232122&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC-_-pla-_-Gaming+Laptops-_-N82E16834232122&gclid=Cj0KEQiAs6GjBRCy2My09an6uNIBEiQANfY4zG9LtiuepzbPtqdnUCg1K9QlMKt9cFkoF7hRKLcExUUaAhYN8P8HAQ

Anyone have any suggestions into other laptops or deals I should be looking at? I want something Higher end. But what to keep it <$1k.

Must haves:

Intel Processor
1080p 15.6" screen
6lbs or less
Dedicated Graphics Card

802.11a/g/n Wireless LAN
More than 500Gb Storage
Upgradeable memory up to 16GB
More than 4 hours battery life

$1100 and no SSD?

^^ I keep looking at the ASUS N550 which is very similar. I would love an SSD but I also want >500 GB of storage.

anyone ever gone the route of using a hard drive caddy + ssd to replace their CD/DVD slot?

In relation to ^ I would prefer the SSD + 16GM ram version but itonly comes with 256GB of storage versus the 1TB HDD + 8GB of ram package. But, this computer does have a DVD-RW/CD-RW drive that I really don't need or care about. Would be a good compromise for me to add more storage and get a better machine.

Triple Post inc...

Finally bit on the ASUS N550 for $1160. I went with the 16GB RAM and 256GB SSSD and then I'm about to order a 9.5mm hard drive caddy and a WD 500GB 7200rpm HDD today for another $60 total to boost the storage capacity to my goal of >500GB.

Since I'm working out of town, that 15.6" screen will end up being my "TV" as well for netflix, movies, etc.

i do that on my work laptop. works great

sounds like a pretty nice config you picked up. curious how the heat output will end up being.

thanks for the feedback. I ended up getting that 500GB 7200 rpm HDD as stated above. Debated for a minute picking up a cyber monday deal on an SSD for the caddy but $50 for a fairly fast HDD is not bad. It will still be going in a compatible caddy for the optical slot.

I'll let you know about the heat. Seems to be mixed results from reviews I've read, but mostly positive. It's definitely slightly more machine than I need at the moment, but I did the same last time I bought one and it lasted me a very long time as a result. Plus, working solo out of town at the moment, I might pick up a few games from over the past few years that I never got around to playing.

Awesome! I decided to hold out. I wanted to get one, but I'll wait for Windows 10 to release and pick up a laptop then.

I have very little use-time on any Windows 8 machine so we'll see how I adapt to it. I will wait to see what the general perception of Windows 10 is and if it's positive I will most likely upgrade to that next year.

Considering a gaming laptop. Budget is <$2500. Want upper-end of "mid range" I think, at that price point, correct? Always built my rigs, don't know much about laptops.

Spec'ed MSI, Origin, Alienware, and Lenovo.

Other brands to consider? And, any recommendations?

I like the Razer 14.

http://www.engadget.com/2014/05/06/razer-blade-14-review-2014/

The $2400 unit comes with a Core i7-4702HQ and a Nvidia 870M (3GB vram). I'd say that's upper mid range for a gaming laptop and it isn't ugly.

17" display.
3.0 GHz +
nVidia (I believe the current standards are the 880 and 970?) w/ 3GB+
Solid state hard drive(s)

Battery life is not relevant. Weight is not relevant.

^ That'd be perfect if not for the display. Thx tho.

---

What about this? Has the 980M (range topper)....

I travel a lot so the idea of a bulky laptop is a nightmare for me. I guess if portability or battery life aren't an issue then go for it.

If the new one has the issue I'll get them to send me an XPS 13 which has an entirely different screen. There's been some people online who have received one of those. I'll lose the convertible screen but it's a work laptop. Better than my shitty old Inspiron.

I'm looking at two of the Yoga 2 Pros, the 59428042 and 59428029...

Am I missing something, or does Lenovo really want an extra $400 for Windows 8.1 Pro and a 512 GB SSD? That seems a little steep.

---

Looks like coupon magic. The non-coupon price difference is $250.

That's why I was asking if there was some other difference between the two models I didn't see. $250 for Windows 8.1 Pro and a 512 GB SSD isn't too bad. For $400 I'll do it myself.

I finally got home for a weekend and started up my Asus

1) I love it. I even don't mind Windows 8, but maybe that's because it is a touchscreen

2) They sent me the wrong model So I'm going to have to send this back to get the SSD and 16GB I paid for.

Got the correct model to play with over Christmas. The SSD is pretty ridiculously fast and I really love the computer overall. Overall I really don't have many complaints about Windows 8.1 either. Pretty intuitive to me.

Excited about all the new 5th gen Intel laptops:

http://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-13-9343-laptop/pd

http://www.businessnewsdaily.com/7657-dell-xps-13-business.html

15 hours of battery life on the world's smallest 13" 1080p laptop. 11 hours with the updated 3200 by 1800 display. Can get a "companion battery" which is basically a big power block that extends it to 22 hours.

^Do you not have a gaming desktop? I see almost zero need for a gaming laptop unless you specifically travel and want to game on the go. For the same money build a much more powerful and cheaper desktop then get an ultrabook. I hate heavy laptops with no battery life.

Laptop is more for work. I wanted something that will run Altium Designer and a few other CAD programs well. I was doing research between the GTX and Quadra GPUs and the GTX makes more sense for my application. I'm hoping this laptop will last me about 5 years, give or take. This laptop is heavy at 7.7lbs, but reviews say 3-4 hours of battery life with mild use. That's more productive than 2 hours.

I used to use my desktop for gaming, but I don't game anymore.

Did work pay for it then? Seems like there's much better options out there from like Dell for a workstation laptop. I guess for that price though...I haven't done the research.

Indirectly, yes. I consulted Dell and Lenovo but both didn't have what this laptop has for this segment pricepoint. I got tired of carrying around a 10lb 17" laptop, hence why I went with the 15.6". It's bulkier and heavier than most 15.6", but offers the 970M GPU that I was looking for and is better than the former Asus unit.

I'm continuing to bug Dell about my faulty XPS 12. I finally got the guy who's helping me to agree on an unlike exchange for a new XPS 13. I requested the new Infinity version with the 5th gen Intel processor. I'm hoping I'll get it. Played with it at the Microsoft store. Pretty impressive laptop.

I think you can get them to do it outside of warranty. Dell swears they've fixed the issue but I'm still seeing new XPS 12's with the issue including the NEW one they just sent me. Looking forward to the new XPS 13 if I can get it.

Woohoo getting the new 2015 XPS 13 infinity i7 with 3200 by 1800 screen as a replacement for my XPS 12. Started out with an XPS 12 1st with a 3rd gen Ivy Bridge. Getting a 5th gen i7. Reviews are saying 7-8 hours of battery life with the 3200 by 1800 screen.

Also Dell is offering this for $100:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dfo&sku=451-bblz&ACD=11708984-7103102-skim33330X911642X10254f87835da5d079247f7adee542ca&AID=7103102

It's a 12,000mAh battery pack that weighs 10 ounces and charges your phone, tablet, and laptop. Supposedly gives the XPS 13 a 4-6 hour battery boost.
