this could be in tech talk or entertainment
i just downloaded iTunes and it retrieved all of my music but every song shows up twice, after searching for info i saw that if i consolidate my music that will go away but that will take my music from its current location to itunes folder and organize it in its own way. i liked having control over how its organized but i know iTunes organizes it, so is it worth it? 3/25/2010 3:33:05 PM |

what does it matter how itunes organizes it if you have your playlists?
but ive had this problem also, and sometimes show repeat tracks doesnt show all the repeats, i didnt know consolidating fixed this problem
cant wait til this thread gets to tech talk tho 3/25/2010 3:37:56 PM |

Yeah, this is probably Tech Talk territory.
Personally, I'm happy with the way iTunes organizes the music. It creates folders for each artist, then within those folders creates one for each album and puts the music there.
If you still see every song twice after that, go to File > Show Duplicates and just delete every other one (there may be a faster way to do that, but that's what I do). 3/25/2010 3:38:35 PM |

you can tell itunes where to store all of your music. it doesn't have to be in the itunes/music folder.
but i would let itunes manage it. It makes all of your files/file names unified. 3/25/2010 3:41:28 PM |

i keep my itunes music in my porn hard drive, i thought he meant it reorganizes the files in some odd way or something
^^it doesnt always show the duplicates, maybe it only works for stuff purchased through itunes

all my music was from cd's or downloaded, not through itunes i think its just something funny with how it initially imports music
also if you go to edit>preferences>advanced and uncheck "copy music to itunes folder" that will also stop duplication, in theory
i did the consolidation but the duplicates are still there, i'll have to keep searching
but yeah the organization is fine, as long as i can have playlists 3/25/2010 3:51:23 PM |

^^ Considering I've only bought 3 of my 2400 songs from iTunes, I don't think that's the case.
I think it checks the Song and Artist name, and if there is more than one (with identical spelling) then the Show Duplicates selection will work.

I'm a genius
if you have duplicates where iTunes copied files into itunes folder plus leaving original in place, here is what you do
1. once you've imported your music, either delete or change folder name to original music 2. all the duplicates will show up in itunes with ! cause iTunes cant locate them
then you follow these steps
Quote : | "If for any reason you find yourself with random missing tracks, (or are trying to recover from a dying hard drive like me), there is an easy way to isolate those missing tracks.
1. Create a standard playlist called "Not Missing". 2. Drag your entire library into that playlist. Missing tracks cannot be copied to a playlist. 3. Create a smart playlist called "Missing" where Playlist - is not - Not Missing.
Voila! All your missing tracks with the dreaded exclamation mark are now in a playlist. You have three options: 1. Delete them (highlight then hit Shift Delete) 2. Reconnect them by manually finding the proper files. 3. Reimport your CDs, which will retain the ratings and playcounts, etc." |
