Political Issues. (American) Let's list and categorize them all.
I'll get started:
(Obviously, this list needs some work.)
--------------------------- Abortion ...Stem cells Agricultural policy and land reform Animal rights and animal testing ...PETA Capital punishment Copyright ...DMCA ...Copyright term extension Crime Disarmament and nonproliferation Domestic violence Drug policy ...Drug policy reform ...Drug abuse ...Marijuana ......Medical marijuana Environment ...Climate change policy ...Global warming Elections ...Electoral reform ...Direct democracy Foreign policy ...Cuba ...China ...Hamas ...Genocide denial ...Israeli-Palestinian conflict ...Tibet Free trade Homosexuality ...Gay rights ...LGBT rights ...Same-sex marriage ...Homosexual agenda ...Federal Marriage Amendment Gun politics ...Gun rights ...Gun control Hate crimes Health care policy ...Health care policy reform ...Universal health care ...Health Insurance Holocaust Human Rights Immigration ...Illegal Immigration ...Immigration policy and reform Internet ...Internet censorship ...Internet taxation Language policy [untitled category] ...Liberalism ...Multiculturalism ...Patriotism ...Political correctness ...Culture war in American politics Gender ...Feminism ...Masculism Morality and ethics NATO ...NATO expansion Nuclear testing Political corruption Political parties ...Democratic ...Republican ...Libertarian Partisan politics ...Anarchism ...Anarcho-capitalism ...Capitalism ...Fascism ...Socialism Privacy ...Wiretapping Poverty Education ...Education policy reform ...Public Education ...Private Education ...School violence Race relations ...Affirmative action ...Racial quota Science and technology policy Separation of church and state September 11, 2001 attacks ...Osama bin Laden Sexual harassment Space policy Tax reform Terrorism ...Counter-terrorism ...War on Terrorism ...Terrorist groups ...Freedom fighters Torture Trade United Nations USA PATRIOT Act ...Wiretapping Welfare reform -------------------------------
If an issue isn't listed, add it to the list.
If an issue has "child" or "parent" issues (sub or super), add them to the list using "..." indentation.
If a new category can be made, add it, and categorize the issues accordingly. ...Or, just suggest the category, and let someone else re-categorize.
Obviously, many issues will be listed under more than one category. (This is a work in progress.) 4/1/2010 9:25:55 AM |

Exactly. It's kind of overwhelming. It'll take a while, and perhaps a few total redesigns, but I figure that as a group effort, we can eventually do it. (Recommendations are welcome.)

National Security --Presidential Powers --Congress's Powers --Domestic Effect of International Law --Unilateral Self Defense and Rescue, Collective Self Defense, Preemption. --Fourth Amendment and Security. Congressional authorization for surveillance. --Habeas Corpus Suspension and Military Detention. --Terrorism and Interrogation. --Terrorism and criminalization of material support. --Trial by Military Commission --The Domestic Role of Armed Forces --Access to National Security Information in Civil Litigation. --Airport Security and Civil Rights --CyberSecurity --Environmental Changes and National Security
I'm sure there are more--this is just what I can think off the top of my head that we've discussed in my national security law class. I'm writing my paper on airport security and its constitutionality.
Environment --NEPA --Constitutional Limits on exercising law. --CAA/CWA/ESA/RCRA/CERCLA etc. --Carbon Trading
Maybe have a broad topic of "Constitution" --Bill of Rights (each of the amendments here). --Constitutional Interpretation --SCOTUS.
International Law --Treaties, Customary Law. --International Organizations and Membership --International Law in the US --International Dispute Resolution. --Foreign Sovereign Immunity and the Act of State Doctrine --Allocation of Legal authority among states. --Protection of Aliens within a foreign state/International Human Rights. --Law of the Sea --Environmental Law --Use of Force and Arms Control --International Criminal Law
Alright, I've got to stop or I could list things all day.
A lot of the categories will overlap, but
Good topic!

Are increased drilling & increased nuclear power economics issues or an environmental issues?
Where does Don't Ask Don't Tell go? Gay rights? Military? Economics/Proper use of public funds?
Is it better to repeat some issues in multiple sections so that certain sections don't have obvious gaps, or is it better to keep them shorter without repeats even if it leaves holes in the categorization?4/1/2010 2:35:46 PM |

I'm not sure I would say wide-spread political issues... but if you take any of the individual denominations (like you listed for other religions) there would be some sort of political issue. I mean, I think religion/Christianity as a whole is a political issue, and maybe labels underneath that wouldn't need to be any more specific than Catholicism/Protestantism? Even some types of protestant churches would count as political (Baptist, Pentacostal Holiness, etc), or arguably more political in America (which is the topic) than Buddhism or Hinduism or Bahai? I didn't want to leave one out just because *I* wasn't aware of a political issue.
Feel free to pare it down though!
And somewhere on the list (I'm not sure where) needs to have Housing and Public Housing (Hope VI, Section 8, Discrimination etc).

If you go to CNN's politics section right now you can certainly find stories like "Should Church force pope out" for the church's covering up sex abuse scandals? And Burro's made a thread in our politics section on a christian militia. And Romney vs Huckabee discussions often involve a discussion of whether Mormonism counts as a "real" type of Christianity as much as Southern Baptist does. Part of the reason Texas is removing Thomas Jefferson from history text books is because he was too liberal in advocating for a separation of church and state. Nuns came into the health care debate on the side of the reform that was passed. So I think Gzusfrk is on the right track in counting religion as a part of politics. 4/1/2010 3:06:22 PM |

Are we talking political issues nationally, statewide, local, or all of the above? Should Wake County School Board incompetence make the list or Chapel Hill's fight over whether downtown should be taller or instead they should spread wider and cut more into the rural buffer, or fights over which counties or neighborhoods should be near landfills, and the like make the list? Some issues seem to cross categories, like public transit with buses locally, or statewide (NC DOT does roads across the state here where as in GA you'd see municipalities paying for them so you get some areas with really good roads and some with really bad instead of a more even spread) or school funding (NC does it largely at the state level where as Texas depends more on municipalities so you get some really rich schools and some dreadfully poor ones). 4/1/2010 3:40:35 PM |

As a subsection of women in the military, I think Nerdchick was saying something in the soapbox the other day about them being in the process of removing the ban on women serving in submarines.
Perhaps under economics, there has been a lot of discussion of a Consumer Finance Protection Agency lately.
Under election reform perhaps a section on campaign financing with things like the proposal for stand by your ad, and shareholder approval would be appropriate given the recent SCOTUS ruling. Also efforts for Public Financing of Campaigns/Voter Owned Elections would be appropriate.
Comprehensive sex ed might be another topic worth adding. The democrats in this state have moved us closer in that direction less than a year ago, but abstinence only vs comprehensive sex is a hot topic in many states.
As long as you list animals up there you might add puppy mill legislation, and tethering/chaining related legislation.

"feminist" is a meaningless term at this point. There are too many mutually exclusives ideologies that call themselves feminism that you can't say anything about feminism without committing the one true Scotsman (like that comic illustrates). 10/21/2013 8:52:53 AM |

campaign finance
data privacy
jurisprudence and legal philosophy. i guess that's partly covered under "constitution". not sure why "bill of rights" and each amendment are enumerated, but nothing else is.
entitlement reform
PETA probably doesn't need to be singled out, either. 10/21/2013 9:43:22 AM |

^^^ what do you mean "enumerated?" If it's what I think you mean, it's because a number of states would not ratify the constitution without adding the bill of rights. So although they are technically amendments, they are in essence as much a part of the constitution as the separation of powers. 10/21/2013 3:11:57 PM |

I mean exactly what I wrote: To count off or name one by one; list:
I understand, as you mentioned, why the first 10 Amendments are set apart as a group in historical context. As political issues, not so much (although there tends to be somewhat less controversy surrounding the rest, because so many they are, to a greater extent, written to address specific issues, not to establish broader principles.)
Still, there's a lot more to the Constitution than the Bill of Rights; there are plenty of things that are "issues" that live in the general articles, for example.
