What are your rules/limitations/exceptions to eating food that is potentially not at its freshest?

For example....
Last night on the local news the lead story was about super market stocking pretzels that had a date of February something. Everyone was all up in arms and I was very confused. I mean other than tasting like crap are these pretzels actually of any danger to anyone?

Or....
On Easter I did the little trick where you empty an egg but leave it intact and saved all the insides in a tupperware container. I realized last night I should use them up so I made some banana bread with them. I've been eating it and am totally fine but a friend of mine was totally freaked out that I would eat an egg more than like, 20 minutes after it had been out of the shell.

Go!

milk/dairy - smell it. It can go bad BEFORE the expiration date or two weeks after. Always smell test.

Eggs can last well beyond their stamped expiration date but watch what you are using them for. For instance if you are using them for baking, go and get fresh(er) eggs. With eggs ALWAYS crack them into a separate container before using them - you can find bloodlines in fresh eggs, and with eggs past the stamped on date, if the albumin part is watery egg = no bueno. Also very obvious smell.
I am also that bitch that opens up every damn egg carton at the grocery store and picks up every single egg to make sure that it is not cracked

I've drunkenly cooked up and eaten eggs that were at least 2 months past the expiration date.

Was fine in the morning, with the exception of the hangover.

pizza - 1 day old on countertop, 2 days old in fridge

open beer - 1 day old only if refrigerated by me

milk - smell test + shake to look for chunks

eggs are too cheap to risk it

soda - 3 days from opening no exceptions

bread is iffy - i'll rip off moldy pieces if the majority isn't crusty yet.

if it has mayo on it and it is over 4 hours old THROW IT AWAY, IT COULD KILL YOU. lol

ripping the "moldy part" off bread doesn't mean you're not eating the mold. it means you're not eating the parts where there is enough mold to be visible to the naked eye

The date is typically a sell by date and unopened food can last a fairly long time. I examine my food like my laundry: the classic sniff test.

LOL, so after you asked me opinion and said do NOT eat it you went ahead and did it anyway. lmao.

If it looks okay and doesn't smell bad it works for me. Best I can tell I've never had food poisoning either.

i had doubled a pecan pie filling recipe and then broken one of the crusts before i had a chance to fill it

i left the filling in the refrigerator for 9 months, uncovered

the part that was left contained 3 eggs and half a stick of butter

i eventually made a pie after those 9 months and it was delicious

I would argue to just eat it and worry about the consequences later, you gotta eat right?

Reminds me. One day I was obviously dragging ass at the gym. So i ask a trainer (packman92) if its ok to eat 3 day old pizza. He says to me "Oh 3 days and it was in the fridge? No problem. I've eaten chicken pizza that was left outside".

If the food is even near the expiration date it is executed son.

I can't have any close calls now son.

Also, I will think it tastes funny just because I'm slightly insane.

I ate a nutragrain bar yesterday that had a best by-date of Aug. 2009. It was a sub-par nutragrain bar.

well a google search said that it depends on packaging?

a jar = 2 years
squeeze bottle = 18 months

this was only 12 months so maybe it is just mental. i also ate a lot of wings tonight so my tummy is probably just angry with me all around.

i never abide by sauce rules. ESPECIALLY if it is unopened i'd say you're fine. i mean smell it. do a finger test. if everything seems fine i think you're good

i save tomato sauce and i think you're supposed to toss opened jars after like a week or so. but i don't. i don't eat them like 4 months later but i don't throw them away after a week.
