I'm feeling crotchety tonight after looking at blog after blog with those fucking "toolbar" footer things. Can someone explain to me why the fuck this trend caught on, and when it will die? Even the msnbc.com website has one now. 4/13/2010 10:58:58 PM |

i'm talking about this sort of stupid shit:
A couple of examples...
http://www.orangeinks.com/blog-tips/skysa-add-a-footer-toolbar-to-your-website-or-blog/ http://skysa.com/
These just happen to be links ABOUT these toolbars while I was searching to find some relevant photos.

I'm looking at msnbc.com and I have no idea what you're talking about.
edit: Oh, that. It's like 10 pixels, big deal. If it really makes you want to kill yourself: http://noscript.net
edit 2: Hell, the msnbc bar even has a link to hide it.

^^LOL. I used it for like 2 weeks. Their tracking tools are quite decent. I thought they were going to be awesome, but ended up quite weak (you couldn't export any of the data - just look at it on their site.)
It's now tossed to the wayside. It's sweet for people with 0 skillz.

Damn. I must be losing it since this is the first I've seen or heard of toolbar footers. I hope it dies soon, but I'm sure it won't. Most stupid things persist long after they are welcome. 4/14/2010 12:35:59 AM |

One word: Teenagers. The biggest problem with the Kin automatically uploading everything is that Microsoft quickly going to become the world's largest repository of underage porn.

See the problem is, sometimes, they work better. Take my cameras...the S3 IS, which uses AA's, has *significantly* longer battery life than my S70 that uses a proprietary brick rechargeable. Plus, if I'm out somewhere and my rechargeable AA's die, I can buy some standard ones anywhere, and new rechargeables are cheap. Yeah, 4 x AA makes for a weighty camera and wouldn't work well on a compact, but. What needs to happen is for rechargeable technology to advance to where they are a cost-effective alternative to the older battery types, which right now they're not.4/21/2010 10:50:22 AM |
quagmire02 All American 44225 Posts user info edit post |
why aren't rechargeable li-ion standard form-factor batteries more common? i ASSUME that they're available, but i've never seen any AAA/AA li-ion batteries that you could throw in a charger (without them exploding or leaking or whatever)
i like standards...i like the idea that i can go buy new batteries (rechargeable or not) if my batteries die and i don't have a charger with me (or if they're not rechargeable) and they won't be hard to find or cost an arm and a leg...i like that most of my non-proprietary devices use AAAs instead of AAs, and that i have adapters that will allow me to use AAAs in AA/C/D devices
so why aren't more devices designed to use AAA batteries, in conjunction with the proliferation of rechargeable li-ion batteries?
also, any device with a USB port (micro/mini/whatever) should be able to charge the batteries inside of it 4/21/2010 11:41:54 AM |
