Thank you, Amazon, for fighting this. I'll be mad as hell if I have to pay taxes over stuff I've bought off there for the past seven years. Who ever wanted to tax internet sales can go fuck themselves.

Ha ha ha, I'm fucked if they get that. I've spent about $5000 on Amazon.com tax free while living in NC.

I mean, it technically is the law. You're supposed to report that shit anyway.

So, if you live in NC then you must pay tax on anything you buy online?

Or is that the rule for all states?

If they didn't allow affiliates from NC to sell on Amazon, then it'd be no problem.

But b/c businesses from NC were selling their items on Amazon and Amazon not charging sales tax, thats what the issue is.

So Amazon did away with their affiliate program for businesses in NC.

Rule is if the place you are buying from online has a "brick & mortar" store in NC, you must pay sales tax. If the place you are buying from online does not have a store in NC, you do not pay sales tax.

my understanding was that it was just added to the budget this past year. some other states employ this if you buy products from state in which you live. i still hate it though. i've had over a decade of tax free internet buying and the thought of sales tax makes me sick.

Yeah, there's a question that asks if you purchased any items that were not taxed this year. That includes items purchased online.

You don't have to, but technically it's fraud.

That's like asking if you're required to drive the speed limit.

I had no idea

I wonder how much I've spent on Amazon in the last year? Perhaps they have a way of looking that up in the My Account section. Now I'm curious.

If you go to the "Your Orders" section of amazon.com, you can search for all orders made w/in certain years

I guessed when we did our tax return this year and said I spent $100 w/ Amazon. Just checked and it was only $77.08

This year (even though its only April) is a lot mroe than that

Maybe North Carolina Tax Representatives should worry about paying me my tax refund on time rather than trying to find a way to tax me more. The entire North Carolina Political Scene is corrupt and greedy. I bet the people who went to Amazon have bought stuff from there and would have to pay taxes on it!

And on a second thought....how much did NC Tax payers spend for them to go to Seattle. Haven't they ever heard of the US Postal System? Man, stuff like this really pisses me off!

They'll spend $10,000,000 in legal fees to collect $2,000,000 in taxes.

Sorry. Did anyone read the article? NC Tax payers paid for them to go to Seattle to ask for the information. We will now pay to fight the lawsuit from Amazon so that NC can get the information to tax its residents on items that were purchased online. NC is spending our tax money to get more tax money. I find this shady and unacceptable. I apologize for coming across as "angry" but this is just crazy.

yeah, so the judge is going to come up with something within 2 weeks...if she says amazon has to give over the data, does that mean that i will suddenly owe nc taxes on everything i spent at amazon, plus interest and a possible penalty?

i like how amazon severed all ties with their NC distributors as a result of the state being a dick...serves the state right, trying to pressure a company into being responsible for what people SHOULD be doing

do i report my online purchases and pay taxes on it? of course not...i doubt any of you do...and why should we? why pay a sales tax on something that was not purchased in the state?

No, he's economically logic

this state's budget is a clusterfuck and a bunch of greedy jews who want to rob peter to pay paul

they've done it for so long no wonder the state is facing a 3 billion dollar shortfall

this is the same thing as buying a coke at a gas station in virginia and then the state demanding tax money for it if you bring it over the state line

the state of nc is run by a bunch of monkeys...i have no objection to paying state sales tax when i buy things in the state, but this is retarded...personally, the only state that has a right to the sales tax in the first place is the state in which the seller is located

Agreed. This is something for the State of Washington to be whining about, not NC.

I have not read this thread in its entirety, but you HAVE to pay sales on anything you purchase. Its the law in NC, and its more or less designed on a honor system. Does not matter whether or not there is physical store located in NC or you buy from an affiliate. You GOT to pay in NC.

I am not siding with the State, but this is Law.

^ that's been mentioned

to which i respond: fuck the state of north carolina...why they feel entitled to tax money from my purchases from vendors outside of the state is beyond me...so if it's an honor system, my honor dictates that i give NC what it ACTUALLY deserves and not what it THINKS it deserves

NC also requires you pay income tax on earnings while living overseas. I don't really see why I should pay NC money when I don't live there, don't work there, and pay taxes in the country of residence

that's right, fuck you north carolina

Quote :
"Amazon has won a major legal case against North Carolina tax collectors, ensuring that the private customer details of 50 million purchases remain confidential.

The North Carolina state wanted to secure unpaid taxes from residents of the region by forcing Amazon to provide the names and addresses of customers, along with details of what they bought from the online retailer between 2003 and 2010.

Amazon attempted to placate the state by providing anonymous information of items shipped to certain postcodes, but this was not good enough for the state, which threatened to sue Amazon if full customer details were not supplied. The anonymised data would not have been enough to identify and prosecute people who had not paid certain taxes.

The US district judge of Washington state, Marsha Pechman, ruled on Monday in favour of Amazon, saying that the request from the North Carolina state went “too far” and violated privacy rights that are part of the First Amendment.

She awarded summary judgement to Amazon, which means the case will not go to a full trial. Customers of the vendor should be delighted with the news, which ensures their purchase history remains with Amazon alone."
