King Douche.
Normally, this would not need to be said, as pretty much everyone already realizes this. But, recently, he made the leap from being just a terrible hack writer to a full-fledged asshat:
http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2010-03-11-lastsong11_CV_N.htm
Key points: 1) Cormac McCarthy and arguably his finest novel, Blood Meridian, are "horrible." 2) His novels are in the tradition of the great Greek tragedians, Shakespeare, and Jane Austen (each of whom he specifically names). 3) His favorite "tale of youth" is his own novel, A Walk to Remember (the very same novel that spawned the movie starring Mandy Moore). 4) He enlightens everyone on the difference between melodrama and drama. 5) He compares himself to Ernest Hemingway.
And so much more douchebaggery. Roger Ebert actually set him straight in completely hilarious fashion:

Quote : | ""The Last Song" is based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, who also wrote the screenplay. Sparks recently went on record as saying he is a greater novelist than Cormac McCarthy. This is true in the same sense that I am a better novelist than William Shakespeare. Sparks also said his novels are like Greek Tragedies. This may actually be true. I can't check it out because, tragically, no really bad Greek tragedies have survived. His story here amounts to soft porn for teenage girls, which the acting and the abilities of director Julie Anne Robinson have promoted over its pay scale." |
Quote : | "To be sure, I resent the sacrilege Nicholas Sparks commits by mentioning himself in the same sentence as Cormac McCarthy. I would not even allow him to say "Hello, bookstore? This is Nicholas Sparks. Could you send over the new Cormac McCarthy novel?" He should show respect by ordering anonymously." |

FOUR FACTS:
No Country for Old Men > The Notebook
The Road > The Notebook
Even All the Pretty Horses > The Notebook
When it comes out, Blood Meridian will be > The Notebook

I just read the article. I can't believe how much a gigantic, deluded douche he is. He considers McCarthy to be the king of PULP yet he himself writes greek tragedies. Give me a break. Dan Brown writes pulp and is rich as shit but doesn't shit on other writers.
I bet Sparks thinks Michael Bay is the best director of all time. 4/21/2010 5:35:35 PM |

The best part is him citing one of his own novels as his favorite "tale of youth." 4/21/2010 5:48:30 PM |

Sparks has also gone on record saying that he "doesn't write romance novels", but that he writes... I don't remember, some sort of other novel that happens to have romance in it. I'd look up the quote but I'm in a hurry.

I love all of Cormac's books....but I was only able to get through maybe 2/3 of Blood Meridian before I finally gave up on it. Maybe I can give it another shot some time. 4/21/2010 7:32:25 PM |

^It's great. It is probably McCarthy's most difficult novel, though. I think it's best read not as a simple genre exercise in the western novel (although it can stand as such), but rather as a satire of the genre in its paradoxical blend of morality and nihilism.

^Yes. Cormac McCarthy may be the best writer of his generation (if not, he is probably one of them) and Nicholas Sparks may be the worst. By the way...
Can you spot the differences between these two pictures?
Neither can I. 4/22/2010 1:43:13 PM |

I sent this (the articles) to my Contemporary Lit II professor (John Thompson) who sent it to the professor that taught the Cormac McCarthy class two years ago. I got responses back from Thompson and the other guy that basically amounted to them laughing their asses off.
It's pretty much agreed in the English world that Cormac McCarthy is our superhero right now. He will do battle with Sparks, and he will send the anti-christ back into the lake of fire. 4/22/2010 8:32:43 PM |
