On your iPad, Kindle, Nook, Reader, etc.
iPad: "The War of the Worlds" by H. G. Wells. I never got around to this when I was a kid, and ever watched any of the movies made about it. I like how Wells describes things. 4/25/2010 4:18:20 PM |

you could probably just post this in the book thread and note that you're reading it on an e-reader. I don't know that we need a separate thread for this.
Do you want me to make a separate thread for when I'm reading mass market paperbacks vs leather bound vs traditional modern hardcover? 4/25/2010 4:20:47 PM |

The reason why I made a separate thread is to suggest some interesting titles that others might choose to read on their e-readers. I'm trying to encourage suggestions for e-reader titles, not trying to compete with the other thread. 4/25/2010 4:23:03 PM |

nah I know, wasn't trying to be a dick. I just figured by now that a huge amount of titles are available for e-readers so if they see something in the book thread they could probably just go look for it for their ebook or whatever.
carry-on though, I won't troll the thread or anything . 4/25/2010 4:26:24 PM |

Is there a place online where you can see what is available on e-book? I'm pretty sure that I'm going to ask for one for my bday, but it really depends on what is available, where. 4/25/2010 4:29:43 PM |

I know that you can see a shitton of what Amazon has to offer on their website, if you look in and around basically ANYTHING related to the Kindle.
Dunno what Apple has on the iTunes website for books, but you can search on an iPad or in the iTunes app itself.

I'm not trying to be an ass, but why would anyone want an e-reader. Other than being trendy or another cool tech thing, I don't see the point. Seeing as how you have one, and you obviously are a reader if you are reading Wells, why did you you decide to get that? Also, do you still buy regular books, or are you only getting time on your iPad or whichever device you have? 4/25/2010 11:56:31 PM |

^ you can't think of a single reason? E-readers can hold thousands of books (yes, thousands). I currently have 2 full bookshelves in my room. And have a few boxes of books in a closet. An e-reader would take up the size of one book (less in a lot of cases) and hold all of them many times over. And they go with you wherever you take your e-reader. When I visit my parents for an extended period of time, I typically take a book with me. With an e-reader, I wouldn't have to choose a book. And if I finish one while I'm there, I can easily start another without taking up more space in my bag.
E-books are typically less expensive than their print counterparts. New releases, NYT best sellers, etc. are usually between $9-15, most of them being 10 or 12. Those same books cost $20-30 in print.
So for those who buy books, it's a huge cost and space saver.
If you check books out from the library, well it depends on where you live. More and more libraries check out e-books (wake county will be in the next year or so I believe). So the convenience there is that you don't actually have to go to the library to check a book out. You just do it online. No worries about late-fees (not that they're that much, but still). No risk of getting a book that some kid decided to write in.
FYI, I don't currently have an e-reader. But I'm probably going to purchase a Nook within the next few weeks.
anyhow /thread divergence.

start with the devices corresponding site: for ex. barnesandnoble.com, amazon.com, etc. and remember that there are plenty of online stores that sell the epub format. But from what i've seen, the best prices are typically from amazon and barnes and noble.4/26/2010 3:33:43 AM |

don't take my first post in here the wrong way; I think e-readers are great, especially for travel scenarios.
But I also love physical books, especially hardcovers and leather bound copies, and so if/when I finally get an e-reader of my own (I've borrowed some before), I will still buy physical copies of books. Whereas some people might look at 2 bookcases full and still having boxes of books around as a nuisance or storage problem, my wife and I love having all of our books and bookcases (since we are finally in a house we are turning the formal living room into a library/reading room).

does the kindle or nook do PDFs? 4/26/2010 9:20:11 AM |

^^^ No offense taken by me, either. In my case, I just sold a house and am going to be an apartment nomad for a few years. I don't have the luxury of keeping a small library for myself at this point, but I love to read. And with a Kindle or an iPad, I *LOVE* getting books over the air.
^ The Kindle does them indirectly. They have to be e-mailed to Amazon's servers for conversion. If you wanna pay like 10 cents, they'll send the converted doc to you over the air. Or it can be e-mailed back to you for free, and you load it on to your Kindle via USB.
I think the Nook does PDFs natively.] 4/26/2010 9:45:28 AM |

why do I get the feeling you don't want us to tell you what eBooks we are reading as much as you want us to know you have an iPad 4/27/2010 11:45:42 PM |
