I'm sick. And when I'm sick, I get homesick.

Today, I miss grilling out on the back porch of my parents' house while watching the calves chase each other around the lush, green pastures, breathing in the familiar aroma of sizzling burgers and freshly cut hay, and listening to Grandma tell vivid stories about growing up during the Depression.

sigh

What do you miss?

I miss going to the general store with my grandaddy. He would let me eat candy and tell him stories while he drank whiskey, chain-smoked and played poker with his buddies.

I love Raleigh and chose to move back here when I could have moved everywhere...

But I really miss the excitement of living around New York City. Any given day I could go to a major sporting event on a whim, I could take the train and get amazing Italian food and sit outside in Little Italy and I could do one of a thousand other things that you can't do anywhere else in the world.

I miss being able to visit my grandparents. And Sunday dinners. And Grandma's fried chixn and boiled potatoes. And Grandma's spoiling me, making me breakfast just how I wanted, because I was a picky little bastard when it came to eating.

I miss the giant front porch at the house my senior year at Elon that we set up the hammock on about this time of year. I loved being able to spend a Saturday afternoon with a book and a pillow in the hammock and then fall asleep in it. Sometimes the train would come by on the tracks right in front of our house and wake me up, but I got used to the house shaking and it was kind of comforting.

If I made a list of everything I missed you people would get bored as hell

The sad thing is even when I get back to Raleigh and I'll be around all the things I miss, there will be new things I'll miss from here. I'll never be able to win

since I've graduated, my parents have moved from my hometown to Raleigh* so really I don't miss that much of my hometown (Kinston, NC) except for Captain's Corner (RIP Captain), a few BBQ places, and just that small town sense of safety

and for the "small town sense of safety" I've only realized that is different from Raleigh since babysitting these past few months...the whole concept of "play dates" is beyond me; I just knocked on my friend's front door if I wanted to play back home/growing up.

*wait...of course there's one huge thing I miss, and that's the house I grew up in. And seeing the house since the new family bought it has been weird. They chopped down the large oak tree in our yard and changed the shutters which completely changed the look of the house. That house I really miss. Occasionally, and only for a mini-moment, do I wish I had gotten married at the home I grew up in instead of my husband's hometown...but it's b/c that house is completely "gone" from our family now (which I always thought they would keep) and not b/c I really wanted to get married there.

i already said it but i'll say it again. i REALLY miss my mom. like a lot. and now its getting selfish - i mean i'm still VERY sad she's dead obviously. but now like i miss her because i know she'd sneak me money if i was poor or help me come clean my house.

but i am doing dream therapy which is pretty sweet. i don't really believe in that shit but we analyze my dreams and its kinda fun.

I miss the innocence of childhood...when dreams were big and unencumbered.

I miss my grandparents on my dad's side and my grandmother on my mom's side...and all the wonderful times with them. When I was a child, visiting grandparents had a magical quality to it.

I miss having passion and enthusiasm for my hobbies and my interests.

I miss the days before I knew what it was like to fall in love with somebody and then lose them and the heartbreak that comes afterward.

Play dates are fucking retarded. It's just a yuppie way of saying, "Yo I'm dumping little Timmy off at your place today."

If I want to play with my friends, I'm gonna roll up there on my bike with a pack of Twizzlers and my jump rope

Wish I could say that. We lived with my dad's parents growing up and my mom's parents were total jerks
