The first word that comes to mind is dagnabbit.

The Krispy Kreme is closed.

For the next month.

How is a girl supposed to get HOT DOUGHNUTS NOW?

The building on Person Street is undergoing a major remodel for the first time since it opened in that location in 1971. The original building was built in 1939 a few doors down.

Last week, construction workers gutted the landmark, which makes 10,000 doughnuts a day for the Raleigh area. The floor was literally rubble, and ductwork dangled from the ceiling.

But it still smelled like doughnuts.

Krispy Kreme officials say the store needed a makeover.

"It's still the original construction," said Steve Wymer, Krispy Kreme's operations director, who along with Stephen Graves, vice president of operations, stood amidst the dust and sparks at the site last week. "It's time to update."

But apparently a lot of folks didn't get the word. People have been turning in by the dozens and overcome with shock when they are greeted with the closed signs. Danny Larimore, the foreman from the Thomasville-based Ritchie Construction company, which is doing the remodeling, said one guy honked, raised his hands out his window and asked, "What am I supposed to do now?"

Zainab Amur Riyami, who describes herself as "Krispy Kreme's #1 Doughnut Lover," was aghast that the store was closed with "no prior warning." Riyami, a student at N.C. State University, had been counting on the doughnuts to get her through exams.

"The yellow tape around the parking lot, the signs inside removed...I think I felt my heart cry a little on the inside," she wrote in an e-mail. "I can't wait for it to re-open. I just hope it still feels somewhat like the old Krispy Kreme - kind of rundown, but just 'home-like.' "

The new space will have a fresh color scheme, more seating, a bigger viewing window to watch the doughnuts get made and a fairly new Krispy Kreme venture called Kool Kreme, a type of soft-serve ice cream.

You can get Kool Kreme mixed with toppings, Kool Kreme milkshakes, and a Kool Kreme doughnut sundae, where they take a doughnut of your choice and balance a scoop of ice cream in the hole. There will be a new coffee station, too.

For the traditionalists, there will still be hot, glazed doughnuts, as well as the other doughnut varieties, such as glazed blueberry or chocolate iced custard filled.

As for the famous red neon sign that guides us like the lights on Ray Kinsella's Field of Dreams, it's in a storage container, waiting to hang in the new facility.

But it won't be turned on for at least another month. Wymer and Graves said construction will take 45 days in all. Workers are onsite from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day to finish in time.

Wymer said it will be impossible to miss the re-opening because the company plans a week-long celebration.

In the meantime, there is hope for the pregnant ladies, the bar hoppers and doughnut addicted. Krispy Kreme has other locations on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh and in Knightdale. Those doughnuts, however, are not hot. They are trucked in from Greensboro twice a day until the mothership makeover is finished.

Of course, doughnut crazies could always resort to cheating and go to Dunkin' Donuts.

DD >>>> KK anyway.

I do enjoy a good warm, glazed doughnut from KK , but outside of that, their coffee sucks and every other doughnut they make besides their originals is nasty imo.

Hopefully they won't touch the big sign in the parking lot. Its neon-y goodness cannot be replaced.

I miss the days when I could go for a 2 AM doughnut if I so desired. I mean I still could (once the shop reopens anyway) but it'd be a long-ass drive from Durham.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. But their coffee has definitely stepped up its game recently.

I have not tried the coffee in a long time because anytime I got any it was not very good. Maybe I'll give it another chance next time I crave a glazed doughnut.

my buddies and i made a krispy kreme donut milkshake once

milk, vanilla ice cream, donuts

one guy got coffee ice cream...

after we drank a glass we all kinda went comatose for an hour or so. It felt like the drug scene in requiem for a dream after they inject the heroin. I'm pretty sure i hallucinated and took on a mild form of diabetes.

never again

I never could eat more than 1 when they're warm and only 2 when cold. They're so rich.

OH WE BACK, FATTIES

Krispy Kreme reopens, Raleigh rejoices, shits itself

RALEIGH -- All is right again in the world.

The downtown Raleigh Krispy Kreme turned on its "HOT NOW" sign this morning after being closed for renovations over the last month.

Despite the rain, doughnut fans began lining up Monday afternoon for a chance to win a dozen doughnuts each week for a year.

Troy Smith, a teacher from Holly Springs won the prize after standing in line for 14 hours. He received the same prize last fall when he was first at the Fayetteville Street store, which opened in October.

He planned to teach class this morning, but there would be no donuts for his students. Sorry kids.

"I love Krispy Kreme," he said with his sleeping bag, green cot and grill nearby. He's also done the Krispy Kreme challenge, which involves running four miles and eating a dozen donuts at mile 2.

Smith served burgers on grilled donuts to others in line during the night.

The burger "was outstanding," said Abe Lawson, a rising senior at N.C. State University, who slept in a tent in the parking lot with his buddy, Brandon Long. "I felt my heart slow down a bit, but I would do it again."

The building on Person Street has not been remodeled sit it opened in that location in 1971. The original building was built in 1939 a few doors down."
