I had heard it before, and knew that it's some terrible Postal Service ripoff shit with bad autotune, but tonight I actually listened to it.

Perhaps the cheesiest lyrics I've ever heard, and I've heard "I Just Called to Say 'I Love You'."

Oh THIS song. I heard this in the conbini the other day and just assumed Deathcab for Cutie had taken the next step in pussification

I was pretty pissed when I heard it. I was like "is that a new Postal Service song or something" and someone was like "NO, IT'S OWL CITY, OMG DUDE."

It's like they took the few good things about Postal Service and then piled in a bunch of crowd-pleaser lyrics and a softly playing orchestra to make it sound less trashy in face of the autotune.

Yea, it's pretty fucking awful and it's so popular it hurts.

i rather like the music itself...but then, i can appreciate most MUSIC

the lyrics are retardedly sappy...but then, that's what appeals to their audience and that's why they now have more money than any of us

*shrug*

honestly, i wouldn't mind if the dude just admitted it

but he's come up with this bullshit of, "well, the postal service only made one record, so maybe my record is the evolution of the postal service"

ignoring the fact that you can't be involved in the musical evolution of a band you're not in, that's the most pretentious way of dodging the ripoff label i can think of

when kurt cobain was accused of sounding like the pixies, he flat out said he was trying to rip them off

that doesn't make ripoffs any better, i suppose, but kurt cobain also had 10,000 times the songwriting talent of this lightning bug hugger

Personally I think that sounds terrifying having 10,000 insects crawling all over you. It's like something straight out of that book Prey.

it's worth pointing out that i first heard this song when tschudi was like "who the fuck is owl city and why are people constantly calling schoolkids to get tickets for him"

but i didn't listen to it until last week at a deserted BK

nothing like shitty food and a lack of people watching to focus your attention on the smarmiest, most disingenuous song ever

and if it's not disingenuous, the guy is just incredibly lame

also, it occurs to me that the younger generation may never know which of their pop stars can actually sing, because their voices will either be pitch-corrected with technology of ever-increasing subtlety or DRENCHED in autotune beyond all recognition

i, too, thought of "100,000 Fireflies" (an infinitely superior song) when i heard that stupid fucking line

also, i didn't actually watch the video

but the only other clip i can think of that shows everything in the lyrics is "down under" by men at work

i felt like the mashup that simonn posted needed to be posted as an mp3, since it's so awesome
so here's the 320kbps version.

i love a few months back when the whole "men at work" plagiarism thing was making news and they had to pay a bunch of money or something. Anyway, Chris Walla had this to say:

"The Men at Work plagiarism verdict is garbage, they got robbed. Related: Owl City should really consider buying Ben [Gibbard] a pony."

No I remember that, because that was the first time my ears were subjected to this

either way, owl city is selling out moderately sized venues now, with live nation backing

i saw postal service once (WITH SOME TWWERS) at go! room 4 back in like, 2001 or 2002, which held like 120 people.

granted it's terrible, but it's what little girls want to hear right now

and what little girls want, little girls parents buy

'tis no different than it's always been.

rip off someone elses sound a few years later, make profit.

I am cursed with this song. It follows me everywhere. If I go anywhere that plays muzak or has "easy listening" music or whatever playing, this song will come on. Last time I got my haircut it was playing. When I was waiting in the lobby at H&R Block a few months ago. One of my gay friends (He literally likes men, I'm not just calling him gay cause he likes this song) has it as both his ring tone and the ringer on his phone so that when I call him it plays the song instead of making a standard phone ringing sound. They even play it when I'm bowling. I can't escape it.
