Practice with a banana. After a while, you'll learn to overcome your gag reflex...

At least, that's what she said.

muhahahaha

i have finally found something at which i am superior to qntmfred

not only does brushing my tongue not make me gag, and scope does not make my nose run

but i have a 30:0 years alive:cavities ratio

If you've never had cavities it's probably because of a lack of certain types of bacteria in your mouth that many people receive from their mother's breast milk or by sharing germs with their peers. I was cavity free until some old skank gave me the bacteria in high school. I've had to brush my teeth two times a day ever since. TWO TIMES A DAY. I wouldn't wish this upon anyone.

^^I think that happened to me my first year of college. I had awesome oral hygiene, then one day it's halitosis (okay, not really) and fuzzy feelings my mouth. I've never had to purposefully deal with bad breath, but now I gotta watch that mutha.

Another reason to brush your tongue, "Black hairy tongue" condition:

I've been brushing my tongue every time I brush my teeth, ~2x a day, for two decades now and STILL gag the fuck out when I hit the back. But every once in a blue moon that'll make me spit out one of those little tonsillolith fuckers and it makes my whole day just shimmer

ugh. not only is the tongue nasty but that giant wart and the stray hairs just complete the package. Who knows wtf is going on the side of the lip there.

I don't like the flexibility in those tongue scrapers. I've actually been on the hunt for an extra one that's just rigid plastic.

Let me know if you find one, TWW.

Pepto Bismol can cause black tongue. Not really indicative of a hygiene problem although it'll freak you out pretty badly and make you think you're dying if you're not aware of the connection between the two.

6^ Bingo. Those are pretty rigid. If you bend that you're likely drawing blood as well.

Are you sure? Cause I bought one that looked like that, and it was a bit bendy.

I don't wanna get burned again so now I try bending them in their package, and so far, they've all been flexible.

And I was out with someone who swore the one they got wasn't bendy, and I bent it with ease.

To be clear, I scrape my tongue hard enough that I've snapped one in two, and if the one pictured is truly rigid, it would snap on the first use.

don't bother with those plastic scrapers.

I use a damn spoon. Flip it upside down, scrape, and enjoy looking at all that tongue gunk collected on the end of the spoon. Can't do that with a plastic scraper

this is the one i have, and i can't live without it, and wonder how people live without it (or without a similar product).

and it is made of hard plastic, so it doesn't bend.

sounds like you have a good oral hygiene routine... but, you just might be surprised at how much more effective a tongue cleaner is, especially the one i posted. costs a few bucks, lasts forever, and in my experience cleans better.

^^^^My bad. I thought it was clear that I was questioning Arab13's assertion that they (the tongue scraper Agent 0 posted) are pretty rigid.
I listed my experiences that led me to believe they were not rigid. And then I explained that the long, elegant ones
pictured in Agent 0's post are definitely not rigid because, if they were rigid, then hard tongue scrapers like myself
would break them all the time.

I have a rigid one similar to what 0EPII1 posted, and I'm looking to buy another one locally.

If you don't know about tongue scrapers, then I wouldn't expect you to know what I'm babbling about.

I have geographic tongue, those scrapers always inflame it. Brushing wand scope works well for me though.

I actually have the exact same make and model as the one Agent0 posted, and I just don't understand what you're saying. I'm not sure how it could be any harder, or how you could snap it. What is your tongue made of? What kind of arm strength do you have?

I seriously can't tell if you're joking or not. This is the strangest thing I've heard in a long time.

what would a "dedicated" tongue scraper do for me that my toothbrush doesn't (especially doing is at least 2x a day)?

it's a serious question...i understand how cleaning your tongue is a good thing (if for no other reason than the reduction of bad breath), but i don't THINK i have a problem with bad breath now, so what's the point of buying a device to scrape my tongue?

^^

removes more gunk (most important reason)

also,
quicker
lasts forever
easier than brushing tongue
covers more area than brush can
more convenient (keep one in your school/work bag to use after every meal/snack)
