instead of punishing them, we should strive to understand their grievances and what motivated them to do these things... It's impossible to judge what they did as morally right or wrong without first drawing an equivalence between their actions and what was first perpetrated on them. 5/6/2010 12:34:58 PM |

Solinari, I really dont think there is much we can do.
I equate it to North Korea. I dont know how much you really know about that country, but lets put it this way... if we were to go to war with the government, despite the fact that the people are opressed and impovrished, they would all rise up to fight the U.S., even though we would be doing them good by removing that government from power. They have been brainwashed to think their leaders are gods, that they can do no wrong, and simply won't understand something like freedom.
I think the terrorist we are dealing with are almost as brainwashed, and will be nearly impossible to 'change the heart and minds' of these individuals. 5/6/2010 12:49:43 PM |

who says we should change their hearts and minds? It is us who need to change our approach to them. We are the ones whose hearts are violent. We are the ones who wish to steal their resources. They are defending themselves. How could we expect any less from them? 5/6/2010 12:54:51 PM |

Why is it an either/or situation? A good doctor treats the symptom and the cause.

God, americans may be disillusioned, but we arent brainwashed. Plenty of people here differ wildly about their own view of American politics and our role in the world. And they are allowed to voice their concerns openly. You can't say that about a lot of other places in the world.
Solinari: Like I stated, there is no approach that the U.S. is going to use to stop this, short of abandoning foreign policy.
And I dont consider killing random civilians defending themselves. But thats just me. If they dropped a bomb off on your front porch, I'll let them know you said it was ok.

Don't feed the troll.
God has been insufferable lately, even spilling his tripe over into sports talk. He's becoming as bad, if not worse, than salisburyboy. Unfortunately, it takes a 2/3 vote in Congress for anyone to get banned around here for obvious douchebaggery. 5/6/2010 1:28:52 PM |

killing hundreds of people and terrorizing a city for 36+ hours isnt really impossible to judge. innocent people died....i am sure he couldnt have handpicked his targets who caused his grievances! he was brainwashed, lied to, made to kill innocent people in the name of god and freedom!5/6/2010 1:50:58 PM |

I stayed at the Oberoi Trident in Mumbai (one of the two they attacked) the third week of November in '04 and '05. They attacked the third week of November in '08. That hotel just reopened in the past month or so.5/6/2010 2:21:33 PM |

We should punish terrorists. We should also try to figure out why they're terrorists and what motivated them. If we just ignore their motivations, and chalk it up to "oh, they're just crazy," we're never really going to "solve" terrorism. We're just going to keep the cycle going for even longer.5/6/2010 3:01:33 PM |

Of course they don't hate us for our freedom. I mean, they're clearly killing and disfiguring Afghani schoolgirls because of their legitimate geopolitical grievances. 5/7/2010 9:57:38 AM |

Exactly. I mean, throwing acid in the faces of schoolgirls, decapitating Dutch filmmakers, hurling planeloads of people into skyscrapers, fighting to impose religious fascism on the entire globe - these are the exact moral equivalents of accidentally killing civilians while trying to put an end to the terrorists who commit such acts. 5/7/2010 10:12:44 AM |

Way to group millions of people from Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Pakistan into one homogeneous group that you can direct your hate towards. 5/7/2010 10:21:28 AM |

You're right. I was way off the mark when I grouped all of those Islamist terrorists into one big group, as if they had anything in common. Also, thank you for pointing our my anger management issue; clearly at least one of those groups of people are not deserving of my hatred.
