Received the following information through email today from someone at NCSU... seems like a great opportunity for some of you to make lots of cash this summer.

From the email:
"I just cannot help but think about all of the college students finishing exams this week or next and looking for work. I think this would be one heck of an opportunity for any of them willing to travel, work hard, and work potentially very long hours day &/or night. Since they may be working anywhere from 50 to 100 hours/week, their gross pay each week could range between $700 and $1,700."

The attached flier:
Quote :
"SUMMER HELP WANTED

Successful completion of a physical and drug screen also required. Each applicant must be 18 years of age or older. The hours will vary but expect LOTS of overtime.

PER DIEM: $26.00/day for meals

LODGING: Provided

Work Environment may include working on or near water, in marshland, beach and estuary locations in hot and humid conditions day or night.

4 years ago I spent the summer in Kodiak, AK commercial salmon fishing. There was a lot of time to tell and listen to stories when we weren't fishing. One you heard a lot about was when the Exxon Valdez went down. It pretty much ruined fishing up there for a few years. Anyway, Exxon was paying for the entire oil cleanup effort. They paid the fishermen $20.00/hr to cleanup oil. A lot of them put down that they worked 24 hours a day. Exxon said nothing and paid them.

My husband is leading crews down there. Supervisor for the company that contracted Shamrock. They're estimating needing 1000-1500+ people down there on the shore. The odds are that they will be 40+ weeks.

You can send me a pm if you're seriously interested in this and I can get you in touch with the company. I don't have a lot of details as I can barely get him on the phone.

I'd do this, but I have a feeling like having asthma would complicate my eligibility as a hard laborer in a chemical spill. Otherwise I'm in a good position to do this--I'm working part-time this summer anyway, and I don't have anything to do besides work and write stories... would be a cool experience.

I don't have a lot of faith in my value to this operation, though.

...but lodging is provided.

Wouldn't that be like "Nah, I'd rather waste the money."

EDIT: Uh, nevermind, that said transportation.

The idea of a collective TWW effort and off-time party house would be cool.

granted it will be a cheap motel/hotel. ive come across a few guys who lived out of hotels for months doing these types of jobs. getting a house would be cool but then you're just throwing away money and you're already away from home (if you're dating/married)

the only problem with this is you'll probably not be in the same place for long enough. they are likely going to move you around in several states, wherever you're needed that day/week/month.

hubby says they're still looking for people. crews are gonna be sent all around the gulf. Right now they're just collecting materials, training people, keeping people on standby. He's worked 96 & 92 hours the past two weeks.

I would love to help out with this for the summer and even into fall... I'll be living just a few miles from the coastline near the FL/AL border. Maybe I will be able to find some way to help when I get there...

I just received a message from a representative of this Shamrock Environmental Corporation, saying that new laws have been passed that allow the cleanup companies involved to only hire folks who reside in the affected states. so anybody interested should keep that in mind before they apply

I guess NC folks just have to wait a little longer for the oil to wash up on our beaches then.

$13 per hour before overtime is NOT EVEN CLOSE to good pay for disaster relief/temporary type work.

the DOT is hiring and the larger divisions have travel opportunities and the per diem is better. look into roadway or bridge maintenance for low-skill labor that pays better. i do something completely different, but i've met guys who do that stuff and the pay is better than this relief work and if you are near the coast you'll get plenty of overtime during hurricane season.

Clearly the pay is fine, or otherwise, they wouldn't have exceeded their quota in a few days. It's called supply and demand.

I've done disaster relief work for a contractor in the wake of Hurricane Ike in Texas. 10 hour days and the pay was $350 per day. This was for driving a pickup truck laden with fuel keeping generators running over about a 3 county area.

$13 per hour, or even $19 is not good pay for disaster relief work several states away from home.
