AND SHE SCRATCHES MY FURNITURE. neither of MY cats do that.

she pees the couch, whines all the time and scratches my furniture

and for all of that, she isn't even friendly.

UGH

I've owned cats my entire life and I have only had a cat pee outside of their litter box for one of two reasons: the litter box is filthy or cat has a urinary problem (infection/crystals/blockage...).

Kitty needs a visit to the vet and the couch needs to be deep cleaned to get rid of the smell.

+1 to bottombaby. When cats are having pain when they pee, they associate the pain with the litterbox so they look for other places to pee.

Or maybe she just doesn't like the litter, or any number of other things.

based on this post it must be illness then. i have had cats pee outside of the litter box too when they were unhappy with change (the litter like was mentioned before, or when i have brought a new cat into the mix - they would "mark" but then eventually it stopped). it shouldn't be the litter because the litter hasn't changed. it shouldn't be the litter box cause they're CLEAN (i have 3 - one for each cat - i mean obviously they share but i have 3 so there are more than enough). so she either must be sick or pissed about the living arrangements.

i know cats do pee outside boxes when they are pissed and being territorial. so i don't know. she is really tschudis cat sooo i guess he'll have to decide what we should do. she didn't used to live with me but now she does - she did not pee outside of the litter box at her former location but she and my cat don't really like each other so i was thinking it was some sort of dominance thing (my cat peed when abby first arrived but stopped once she got her own litter box). but i hope she isn't sick or else then i'll feel bad

oh and she only pees on ONE spot on the couch. one specific spot - so if she's in pain why does she not associate that spot with pain and switch it up? plus i have SEEN her peeing in both a litter box AND on the couch (within the past 24 hours) so i don't really know what her deal is. hopefully it isn't a urinary tract infection. i mean if it was that i'm assuming she'd have gotten sicker over the past few weeks w/ it being untreated. this has been an ongoing problem ever since she moved in (a few months ago). i THOUGHT it was my cat at first cause she hates other kitties and sharing a litter box. i just recently discovered it was abby.

Since the cat is female, it's less likely to be a urinary problem. Males have the shorter urinary tract in cats, so they're more prone to UTIs and the like. However, females can have problems. Cats can even suffer from stress induced cystitis.

If it started out as a reaction to the change in the household, it's going to keep happening until the smell is out of the couch or rug. You need to do a good thorough deep clean with something like Nature's Miracle to remove the odor that will attract the cat back to the spot to urinate.

Be it behavioral or health, I'd treat it the same way. I always separate the cat from the rest of the family by putting it in a bathroom with food, water, and a litter box. A stressed cat and an ill cat will appreciate being in a safe space. If it's behavioral, it'll give the cat a chance to regroup and relearn its litter box. If the cat is sick, you'll be able to better keep an eye on what's going on and administer medication.

yea i'm just all sorts of confused now about what her problem is. i might take her to the vet just to rule out medical problem because i REALLY did not think she'd be the one peeing. so it is probably best to eliminate that.

then i don't know what to do - she's been here awhile so i think we might be passed the bathroom/safe spot thing. i mean she knows my cats so i have no idea what is wrong. she is bff with my kitten they run and play all day and all night.

anyway thanks! i just got some natures miracle and a new futon cushion (with a vinyl cover) a few weeks ago. so i THINK i will just throw away the outside cover. MY cat that peed when abby first arrived ruined my other futon cushion (she was peeing cause she was pissed). then once i got a new one AND got her a separate litter box she stopped but i think that the outside cover probably still smells like pee to them so maybe abby started peeing because it still smells like my other cat's pee? i'm just gonna get rid of the cover all together and see if that helps. and then rule out medical problems. and then hopefully we will have an answer!

le sigh.

that makes sense to me.
sounds like you've got a good plan!

i hate it when a kitty pees somewhere other than the litter box.

lol. oh and she didn't have a UTI

what had happened was SOMEONE started peeing on the futon (coulda been her coulda been my fat cat) and then it just went downhill from there. SO i threw away the cover, got a new cushion and sprayed this spray on it and it worked and she stopped

i think when i washed the cover it still smelled like cat pee so she kept going but once that was tossed she didn't pee anymore. but just for good measure i still sprayed the spray on it 3 times a day.
