I spent all my time running around the woods/fields when I was younger, yet I've never pulled a single tick off of me. I feel like I failed some Genuine North Carolinian test. 5/17/2010 11:22:16 PM |

I got into a nest one time on the farm, and I was brushing them off with my hands by the thousands. they were the miniature baby seed ticks too. They looked like they would be too small to draw blood, but just seeing them swarm around on your leg was enough to give you a panic attack. 5/18/2010 12:00:45 AM |

I'm gonna grossly underestimate my number of tick bites this year at 20. That in no way includes just the number I've found crawling on me. Field work is a bitch.
^^^and don't underestimate their ability to get to your bloodstream at that size. They attach just like the adults, but are much, much harder to pinch off.

I, too, have stepped into a nest of seed ticks. I first noticed them at lunch when I picked about 15 off as I felt them crawling up my knee/thigh area. Then I found the other 40 or so down around my ankles.

I hate tick nests... blah
I haven't had a tick since I had RMSF because I am on that shit like white on rice now... Yall need the super nice tick repellent stuff for your clothes (and I would spray the really high DEET stuff directly on my skin, but I don't really suggest that for others) 5/18/2010 9:31:27 AM |

Permanone works well, if that's the nice stuff you're talking about. The problem is that you can't just apply it on your skin (at all) or your clothes right when you're ready to go out. It's supposed to be sprayed on your garments 4 hours before skin contact, at least in dry conditions. I only put it on my boots, primarily because of the damn chiggers. If there was only something I could do about my waistband.
DEET probably does the trick, too...that's if you can deal with that nasty oily feeling, bad smell, and the fact that it ends up eating through everything. 5/18/2010 8:05:18 PM |

so everything I read said that a tick would have to be latched on for 24-36 hours for it to transmit a disease (i.e. lyme disease). My tick was latched on for 20-30 minutes max, so I'm probably good. I'm still paranoid cause I have a bright pink bump (like a mosquito bite bump) at the spot where I was bitten and then a light pink circle around the bump.
Of course, the bump could be from where I tried to burn off the tick and hit my skin, and the light pink circle could just be inflamed skin from itching the main bump 5/18/2010 8:22:02 PM |
