It's not warm enough yet for it classify as an emergency. Once the dead of summer hits, they have to respond to that within a day or so, I believe.

my options were

emergency: press 1 --> leave voicemail

non-emergency: press 2 --> will be out of office till Wednesday, leave voicemail.

I didn't want to wait 3 days so i pressed 1.

still though i don't wanna have to sit around in my place for 6 hours. At least i scheduled the cable guy to come on friday too

If you're in an apartment you shouldn't have to be there for them to fix it.

if theres not even anybody to take a call for a few days, you might want to consider contacting a different HVAC sub

well if its free then yeah i hear you

i just dont know how any HVAC company could get away with that, except maybe during a week in spring or autumn when it was like 68 degrees all week

although after typing that out, this week hasn't been THAT hot or cold

Cancel your service request and call a different company. If this thread is an example how how they run their business and treat their customers, you should take your business elsewhere. That 8 -2 bullshit is unacceptable.

I just woke up to people replacing the entire AC unit outside my door.

I don't feel like going out there and making small talk though.

so they were supposed to deliver a bed and couch. They told me one of the nightstands was split and they'd bring out a new one next week.

Inside the ottoman I guess a bag of silica beads broke and now there's beads all over the place. The delivery guy was like 'you can probably just dump everything out' and i was like 'dude honestly this ottoman is filled with beads i just know i'll be still cleaning up a year from now, i'd rather get a new one, bead free' and he said that was fine so i get that replaced

what kinda sucks is they forgot to send the beams for the bed i bought and now i don't have a place to sleep tonight and they were talking like tuesday-wednesday for delivery possibly. Customer service is suppose to call me in a bit to see how i like everything, i'm gonna beg them to try and deliver the stuff out today so i can sleep in my room

hiiiii

how did you people who have had AC recently break know it was broken?

mine is still running but the thermostat hasn't been below 80 or 79 all day. i was noticing it was ultra hot. i just got back after being gone a week so obviously i had it turned up while i was gone. but i've been back ALL afternoon and my condo is like 700 sq ft and its been set on 73. then i pushed it down to 68. still says 79/80 on the thermostat. it just doesn't appear to be getting any cooler at all even though it is running.

WTF?

I would venture to say that your coolant is low in the AC unit, causing the compressor to run but not cool the house down. How old is it?

^^is it blowing cold air? if it was set on 80 for a week it will take a while for the ambient temperature to drop.

ps. i've been meaning to pm you

^^ ummmmm. i feel like it broke right when i moved in but i don't know if we replaced the entire thing or just part of it. but either way it isn't older than 5 years. if it was replaced when i moved in then it is < 3 years old.

AC units use coolant? sorry i honestly know NOTHING about them. i remember last time it broke it wasn't working AT ALL and it was like 95 degrees inside. this time it is running and the air feels like kinda cool but not super cool. esp not cool enough when the thermostat is set on < 70.

^ i mean the air only seems kinda cool not super cool. but if it was on 80 for a week (slightly over a week) it will still take awhile even though my place is small? how long do you think before i should know if that is what it is or not? ok then pm me haha

might want to fill up on the refrigerant before your compressor goes out.

This may have already been said but I don't think AC qualifies as an emergency. Heat, power, and water would.

well ACTUALLY during a heatwave AC could qualify as an emergency

especially if you had a medical condition

anyway, i'm not the OP i just had a question and put it in the most recent AC thread.

Just had to have the capacitor replaced today. Luckily the wife (who is pregnant and has a medical condition which requires her to be kept out of the heat) left yesterday for a business trip to St. Louis.

It's been a lame few days in the house (well, Sunday and Saturday since we were out of the house mostly Saturday) with the heat, but it's finally getting cool in here again.

it probably just needs time to cool down. check your unit (giggity) to see if the coils are frozen over and the filter is clean. frozen evaporator coils indicate low refrigerant, dirty air filter reduces air flow and makes your a/c run longer unnecessarily.

If it's broke you should tell it to start working!

^^^^ Your AC uses coolant/refrigerant. If you have a leak somewhere in the line it can drain itself and the AC will lose any ability to cool your house, but it won't stop trying. I'd get a refrigerant level check first, then if it's low you can search for a crack in the line or compressor.

^ true not legally

^^, ^^^^ thanks. i feel like it was working this afternoon though. like i feel like its only in the past few hours its been running but hot?! i don't know. maybe i just imagined that it was cooler this afternoon.

but just changed my air filter before i left so that shouldn't be it - right?

i don't really know how to check the other stuff. i live in a condo and don't really understand how the AC works. like i know i have a thing in a closet in here but there are also things outside.

look under the filter on the thing in the closet, you should see some coils weaving in and out of metal fins. make sure these fins are 1. not frozen and 2. clean

i just opened the big vent thing where i put the new air filter right before fathers day

and its already full of shit (lent/whatever). like it looks like i need a new one already and i JUST got it. what does that mean?

now i am looking farther into the rectangle in the closet via the vent.

it means you need to break out broom the feather duster.

look above where the pipe exits the unit in the closet. the thing you are looking for looks similar to this (size and orientation may vary):

ok i see it! what do i do? i can only see the inside of it though becauseeeee in my closet its like a big metal rectangle like over 6 feet tall with no doors or anything on it

but i can go through the vent where the air filter is on the side of it and look UP in to the big rectangle and that thing you posted is what i am looking up into

Another question for people who know something about air conditioners:

A few months ago, one of the AC pipes would regularly freeze after a few hours of continuous use. This issue has been fixed by our apt's maintenance.

Two days ago, that same pipe that used to freeze was instead FUCKING HOT, and there was warm-ish air coming out of the vents. I turned it off for about half the day, tried it again, and everything has been fine and cold since then. What I'm wondering is:
-What might have happened?
-How might I avoid it happening again?

ohhhh that sounds KIND OF like what is up w/ mine except i dunno if pipes are frozen or not yet

currently unscrewing metal panel on front of giant rectangle to get to strange triangle piece that chop posted. it is definitely dirty.

ok here are the pictures that i have. i dunno. i didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. i don't know how to tell if coils are frozen but there was no ice/frost around them and they didn't feel cold.

this is the cover thing. whatever that stuff is is SUPER dirty so i dunno.

inside the rectangle dun dun dun....

vent thing that goes to rectangle and where i JUST put a new air filter in < 2 weeks ago and it already is totally full of shit

i know i lived w/o AC too

but right now my place is small

so my power bills are still like $40 a month with AC

so i can hack it.

i think it is fixed thank goodness.

ur situation was exactly like mine. Set to 72, was hovering around 80 and getting warmer. No air coming from teh vents. It had leaked 2lbs of coolant. my landlord paid the bill but i think for the guy to come out and recharge it, was maybe $200? I honestly can't remember though, been a while and wasn't my bill to pay.

the coil needs to be replaced, that's much more expensive. Landlord is holding out.
