Really. I'm not trying to be a dick, but how is her style a good role model?
How does one gain anything from following that role? Is she the first lady or a fashion model?
(I'm really just trying to understand this -- it seems like such an incredible waste of time.)

Can anyone find me a photo of Michelle Obama in an outfit that costs less than $20?

^^ many of her clothes are from J.Crew and Gap. She's supports budding American designers. She reuses the same outfits occasionally. She also mix and matches designers within an outfit, which is very common for Americans but not for political figures.

That's respectable -- I guess it could be much worse. (sorry to sidetrack your thread)
I'd just like to see her in no-name jeans and a t-shirt every once in while.

You couldn't even find a photo of most people in college and beyond where the close is less than $20. The opinion of someone who is so unreasonable doesn't matter.

I wonder what would happen if you compared Obama and Laura Bush on the points of criticism raised here

What the hell kind of $30 full outfit is a prominent figure who will be seen by at least thousands of people in every photo going to wear? Other than maybe a bathing suit.

We'll end up with politicians looking like the PM of Japan

A bit tacky, but I'll take it. It looks comfortable and functional -- and that's all that "everyday clothes" should be.

You're probably just trolling, but many people consider clothes to be an investment as others judge you on your appearance. That isn't meant to suggest that you can't look good on the cheap, but most political figures and their families need to look better than just alright. For them, it's not wasting money because it serves a purpose. You would expect the manager of a given business not to wear Goodwill suits, so it sort of goes without saying that the president and the first lady should dress better.

Yeah, but a public figure wearing no-name clothes (and not as a stunt,) would also serve a purpose.
As it turns out, Michelle Obama is someone aimed at that -- using "lower" designs such as L.L.Bean,
but it would be nice for a political figure or executive to wear, as m52ncsu put it, "thrift store clothes". (He's the one trolling.)

I love Michelle Obama's sense of style. It's refreshing to have a first lady in the White House with such an eye for clothes. I really liked her choice for this year's state dinner.

As a teacher, I am glad to see the young women cotton to styles like Michelle Obama. She IS a role model because she is still sexy and sophisticated without having to spend thousands (ex. Palin) or dress like she needs attention (ex. almost any young starlette). I have used her as an example a lot when my classes discussed appropriate styles of dress for interviews.

Congrats that you can buy clothes on the cheap. However, this thread is not about your frugality.

What's all this fascination with Michelle's looks and clothes?

Because honestly, her style is weird (not always, but in many of the pics in this thread), and she is not good looking.

Praise her for being a good person, a good mother, a good wife, a good daughter, you know, things that count.

But no, the media always wants to praise people for superficial things (and in this case, even those things are not there).

i think people appreciate having a first lady that can dress well. hillary during the white house years and laura bush were not the most style conscious women.

and the fact that she wears clothes that are affordable to everyday women is what gets her the label of a style icon.

it has nothing to do with race - it's the fact that she's a first lady. first ladies are often scrutinized and picked apart for what they wear.

This thread has gotten off topic. I don't care what you think about what she needs to wear in terms of cost. The first lady is basically the 'hostess' of our country.
^^really? It's barely even worth taking your comment seriously. J.Crew was an example for the hippie to understand that she purposely tries to wear clothes easily accessible to the general public.

The dress doesn't cut into her in all of the pictures of her in that dress. I love the dress sans that.

I think that she's a very attractive and well dressed woman. It has been a long time since we've had such a first lady in the white house.

You can say a lot of nice things about her but she is NOT attractive. I also have no problems with how much a first lady spends on clothing, as mentioned she is the hostess of America and should dress well. Can you dress well without spending a ton of money? Yes of course. But it doesnt bother me, as long as its her money and not tax payers money she' spending. I also believe she doesn't have to set the fashion sense of the country. Just dress well and stop trying to be Jackie Kennedy every time you get dressed.

Jackie Kennedy did not dress in clothes that we easily affordable to the average american. Michelle Obama doesn't all the time, either, but at least she tries.
