my apt has smoke detectors built in, and whenever lightning strikes near here (to where I hear thunder), the smoke detector will "squeak"

Americium detects ionization. This is a long shot, but ionization from the lightning?

errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoke_detector#Ionization

A lack of ionization would set off the detector, not increased ionization.

Not that your smoke detector is going to detect ionized air from a lightning strike either way.

I doubt it's ionization, because it's nearly instantaneous with the visible flash.

Most likely it's an induced effect, but it seems like a poor design (and is annoying)

Are your smoke detectors connected to a fire detection system in your building?
