What is it with professors that spend all of the first class reading it, and also hand it out as soon as you walk in, and email it to you 3 weeks before the class even begins??

Lets just have a free first day and not worry about it.

usually to see who shows up and who doesn't so they know how many openings for wait listed students they will have

^^ I should add this right now is a history class if you know anything on their department's waitlist policy.

nope i dont, i only had to take 1 history class and i took it as a senior so i had no prob getting in

Not saying you didnt have a problem getting in, im just saying how the history dept drops ya if you dont show first day and also how they run their waitlist program.

Dint know about the dropping policy... that sucks. But yar, just take it for granted that you don't have to do anything the first day.
My physics lab TA last semester was awesome though... first lab we walk in, sit down, she says "Hm, I don't really want to go over the policies, it's not that important and you can read it on your own time if you care. Is everyone okay if we just skip them?" ^^"
Granted, first day of class with you, you started cussing about the syllabus and saying you hated the class when you first took it, now you're stuck teaching it.
