I don't really need one but my car has the hookup to plug one in and I'm sure I can get them on the crazy cheap nowadays

yes I said iPod...not iPhone or iPad, just a good old portable music player

oh and IBT "2005 just texted me, it wants its thread back" etc

if you want a new one, just get the "classic" 160GB - it's 70 bucks more than the 16GB nano for 10x the storage

this assumes your car really has the ipod connector and not just an aux in from a 3.5mm jack...if the latter is the case, what ^ said

yeah it has the actual ipod connector...and i dont even think i need it cause i already have XM and a hard drive, and a compact flash drive, but i need to expand my capacity

do the classic ipods use hard drives instead of solid state memory cards? i might opt for the 16gb nano if theres no chance of the drive motor ever dying

yes, the classic ipods use standard HDDs, while the others all use some flavor of solid state storage.

how likely is the HDD in a Classic to die?

i have a classic that I use on a regular basis (ie several hours every day at work and in the car etc.) and I have had 0 problems with it for over 2 years now. Before that I had a previous generation ipod for 3 years that I used for hours every day and never had a problem. Do with that info as you wish.

i have a fat nano, i got it refurbished for cheap. you could have gotten a ipod touch from a duke student as they all got them a year or so ago and many sold theirs.

If I wasn't spoiled having my music and phone all on one device, I would go back to an iPod classic in a heartbeat. I had the classic for 4 years before switching to the iPod Touch (had for about ~5 months then I got the iPhone) and even though the touch was "pretty" I prefer the classic for space and use.

agreed. I love the ipod navigation on the itouch/iphone. Especially since all i have is an aux jack in my truck the classic can be tough to navigate at times. But if Tree has a real ipod adapter then he'd never have to worry about it.

I have the 80 gig classic, and have had it since January of 2007. It almost always stays in the car. I've never had any hard drive issues, but some sort of contact did break in it last month - which Apple took care of free of charge (gave me a refurbished Classic).

I'd get it.

i have a itouch and the only problem that i have had with it is that IIIII dropped it on the hold button. so it is constantly held down. but it somehow recognized the problem and now ignores the signal from that button and works just fine.

once i load up a bunch of music on it, it would primarily be sitting inside the center console of my car and shouldnt really have much opportunity to get dinged up

any worries about heat? ie sitting in a hot car during a hot summer day?

I just purchased a Zune HD 32GB and love it. $140 on special at newegg (and walmart was running it too) both with extras to make it even sweeter.

To me Zune Pass is the cornerstone to an awesome experience. Unlimited music, $15/month, keep 10 of the songs - and word on Engadget today was that may drop to $10 or $11 with the windows phone launch. Also, my personal opinion is that the interface on the device shames the iPods - fast, pretty, logical. Instead of left to right tables it uses depth change and 3D animations - by the time I charged it the second time I had it all figured out, way easier (to me, of course) than iPod was.

Applications, however, are kinda sparse. Great Facebook and Twitter apps, and 5 or so games I play regularly. Great web browser (almost identical to iPod experience except zoom/pan is silky smooth and has physics). HD video-out (with cradle), 2x the battery life of an iPod (watching video - just a touch longer on music (I charge about twice a week)), feels smaller/lighter, NO RETARDED VIDEO CONVERTINGS - it plays Xvid, AVI, etc etc straight out of box. Fairuse Wizard is your friend. Oh, and all the apps are free - so it won't turn into a money pit.

And don't totally base your aesthetics decision on the best-buy stock unit. The new firmware updates brought the windows phone 3D pivot to almost everything in Zune and it looks freaking amazing.

i certainly appreciate the info, and i've used an older zune before, i didn't dislike it

but this is pretty much going to be for my car, and in addition to a hard drive, a compact flash reader, and stanard yellow/red/white RCA inputs, it has an iPod input, so a Zune isn't really something I'm looking to get...I might use it when I run but for the most part its going to just be sitting in my car

hahah yeah i helped some computer illiterate friends with their ipods back in the day...i think the key to using itunes is to disable every single 'automatic' option...luckily i have about 10 gigs of music on one hard drive, so i shouldnt really have to use itunes more than once, or a few times max

i have a 9.3 gig HDD in the car that rips CDs and compresses the music to some weird non-standard rate like 132k or something, but it sounds great, and i have about 80 albums on there and still about half the space left...combine that with a 2 GB compact flash card full of music and i might only need a 40 GB iPod or something...160 seems like overkill with what else i've got

^ I'd take some compression for 10x the songs over some audiophile FLAC shit. I'm not throwing down the dough to see a 0.005% increase in quality.

so it has an ipod hook-up or usb slot? i've never seen a HU with an ipod plug... what would that be anyways? I've only seen USB slots where you can hook an iPod (or other mp3 player or thumb drive).

its a proprietary iPod hookup...this is a picture of someone else's, same brand car, different model

the CF reader is slick as hell too

and while the hard drive is very cool, you have to rip CDs to it, you can't transfer stuff from a CF, so the iPod should do nicely

i heard on new Chevys you can record XM music to the hard drive!

FLAC is overrated, even for above-average listeners. Yes, there's an audible difference, but when I'm at home I'm not listening to digital in the first place, and there's no way I'm wasting money on a reference-level system in a car because I'm IN A CAR.

since the question posed was NOT "what should i get other than an iPod because i know most of the people here hate everything mainstream?" i'll add my two cents about which iPod you should look into getting.

i have tried the Nano, the classic iPod, and the Touch. ever had any use for a shuffle. if you're looking for something that is good to use outside of the car in addition to being good for the long trip, i'd go with the touch. it has access to tons of free apps as well as tons of paid apps if you want to pay for them. A 3rd gen Touch with just 16GB of capacity can provide you with plenty of songs, podcasts, audiobooks or video (if you have passengers) to keep you occupied while driving. it offers a good battery life too if you are taking a long flight and need something to stay entertained. you can get them on eBay for a good deal almost all the time.

if you just want capacity but don't care about apps or anything like that, just get an 80 or 160GB classic. chances are that you can fit all of the audio/video that you own on one that size and you can just designate it as your car iPod and only take it out of the car to add new stuff to it.

yeah i'd say just go with a classic then. they have higher capacity but none of the extras. sounds like it'd be perfect for what you're lookin for.

Disclaimer: I didn't read the thread

I've got a 160 gig iPod Classic. It works great and I recommend it, but there's a caveat. It's useless to put more than around 90 gigs on it. Every time I've done so it begins to wig out.

I'm not the only one having the problem, I've seen it in Apple forums online. It's not really a big deal for me since I rarely have more than 60 or 70 gigs on it at a time. And other than that one issue it's been great for over two years now.

good to know...i probably don't have more than 30-40 gigs of music so hopefully it wont be an issue

did it seem like it started to act up because of file space, or numbers of files?
