Where have you been? Not that I agree with it, but murder charges are being handed out like hotcakes. Kill someone negligently while drunk driving? Some places will charge you with murder. The teller has a heart attack during your bank robbery? You're charged with murder.
This cop can't claim "I'm only doing my job." He wouldn't have been fired had he chosen not to pursue the speeder. He chose he actions, and people died. He's at least guilty of negligent manslaughter, and should definitely go to jail. Fuck him to hell.5/27/2010 3:10:57 PM |

Private law enforcement, perhaps? Tougher penalties for [actual] crimes? -- I for one would like to see a minimum of a life sentence for those that kill. Actual murder?...then you get no parole.

I'm surprised they haven't blamed the driver of the Skylark and charged him with manslaughter yet. Isn't that the norm when you can't blame the victim and they don't want to take credit for their actions these days?
120 MPH in a 65 to catch up to a guy going 15 MPH over is ridiculous and uncalled for.

Given that this isn't something codified by law ("standers by shall yield to bullets!"), there won't ever be a reason to state such a failure in an incident report.
Here's the intersection

My take on this, seeing as we don't have very much information:
-If his siren was on, it's the fault of the people pulling out in front of him. Still sad that people died, though.
-If he just had his lights on without the siren, then that was incredibly unsafe and we (probably) could not have expected the other car to know he was coming. His fault, and he needs to face some punishment or reprimand for it, even if it's just being fired. At thee very least, he should be fired in this case. 5/27/2010 3:28:59 PM |

Killing someone while driving drunk will get you manslaughter charges.
By definition, if a death (guy having a heart attack) occurs during the commission of a felony (armed robbery, et al), that's murder.
Chasing a criminal down the highway and accidentally killing two people in a car that didn't hear sirens and see lights and know that they needed to stop is regretful collateral damage caused in the line of duty.
PS - idiots who don't know how to act when police are running down the road (or any other emergency response vehicle, for that matter) deserve whatever they get.5/27/2010 3:30:43 PM |

why should the trooper? regardless of your OPINION, the person he hit was breaking the law, while the trooper was not
i'm not defending him, just pointing out that of the two people who actually broke the law, one is dead and the other, i presume, got away

the trooper did not have a green light
and even if he did, neither a green light nor flashing lights on the vehicle guarantee right of way - the law still requires that ALL drivers exercise due caution
