I was waiting outside the Harris Teeter a few years ago when I saw some kids pull up in an Audi. At least two passengers were drinking budweisers. The driver idled in the fire lane while the front passenger ran into the store. He returned with a 12 pack of beer.

I called the cops on them and followed (from a safe distance) until I confirmed that they had been stopped. Was this the right choice?

Calling the cops was fine, since drunk drivers deserve to get pulled. Following them was an asshole thing to do, tho.

As much as I want to call you an asshole, I've definitely bitched at people who tried to hop in my car with an open beer.

However, calling the cops and following someone in a situation where most people would just shrug is a dickhead move.

what a bullshit law. Beer is cheaper than water at the gas station nowadays, and I can drink a 24oz beer without being over the legal limit. So it's OK for me to chug the beer down in 5 minutes and then hop into my truck and drive home, but sipping on it to quench my thirst on a hot day while driving home is illegal in this state?

some TWW detective work may find the actual statue but I have a couple of friends that are convinced that NC just passed a new open container law effective January 2010 that allows for people to drink wine/beer in the car as long as the driver is stone sober

but yeah what the OP did was a total dick move. if you have nothing better to do than bust college kids drinking beer in a campus neighborhood then I feel sorry for you. and don't give me that holier than thou bullshit about the law and your relative/friend that was killed by a drunk driver either. that shit you pulled probably got at least one kid a felony, the others serious misdemeanors, and all of them fined/lawyer fees out the ass as well as anything that NC State/Paul Cousins did to them. if the driver wasn't swerving all over the place posing a clear danger to others, you should have left him alone.

I believe in a law and order society. You want to start turning a blind eye to crime? Well, then you deserve the ghetto you'll find yourself living in eventually.

No detective work will ever find this statute. It is illegal in NC

However, every now and then, a bill is introduced and summarily killed in the NC legislature that would legalize the practice. When the local news covers it, all the college students jizz their pants and claim that it is legal because they heard it on the news man

It took them a while to come, but I called as soon as the kids pulled up and I saw them drinking. The passenger took a little while, but not a really long time, to purchase the 12 pack.... Altogether I'd say it took about 20-25 min for the police to respond. The patrol may have just been in the area... Not sure if that is fast or slow response time.

if you're going to call the cops on someone and you can follow them safely enough, you might as well. I've done it numerous times.

The last time I did it, I followed a SHITFACED drunk driver until he pulled into a parking lot. I followed him into the parking lot...he jumped out and walked up to my truck...I just waited until he got back into his car and drove off, at which point I followed him again. He stopped in another parking lot, which I followed him into and blocked the exit of. He walked up to my truck again and yelled at me some more, then gave up and stumbled into a bar, leaving his car in the parking lot. I waited there until the cops arrived (although I moved my truck from blocking the exit, as I clarified with the 911 operator that I wasn't legally allowed to do that).

In this case, though, if it looked like the driver wasn't drinking, I would've left them alone. Also, I'm about 99% sure that it at least used to be legal to drink in the car in NC, as long as the driver didn't drink anything at all.

I surprised the cops even showed up, I'd say it's more likely that your call had no effect and they got pulled for some other reason.

how exactly were you endangered? and if you were worried drunk drivers (though you never said the driver was drinking) why would your reaction be to follow them? get away from them if youre worried about your health and safety.

Don't lie. You weren't waiting outside a Harris Teeter.

Did you guys not see "(from a safe distance)"? Of course I didn't get too close to them... But I did stay on the line with the 911 operator as I tracked them. She thanked me after the cop found them and told me I had done the right thing.

I'm glad you feel better about yourself because of it. You must be so proud.

Nah, we cleaned out my brother's house this weekend, and on the road back there was a box full of beer and liquor bottles behind the driver's seat, some of which had been opened. You wouldn't know unless you felt like poking around in the car, and if someone did notice, all it would take to get left alone is explaining.

^ sure... That makes sense. As long as no one is drinking it there's no real issue. That's what the open container laws are really trying to address after all.
