"Reports describe the device as a massive centrifuge to be placed on a barge. It would then suck in the polluted water and separate the oil from it. National Post is reporting that the idea of the machine came to Costner during his filming of "Waterworld," a movie that featured a giant oil tanker as the base of the main villain, played by Dennis Hopper.

Kevin Costner had nothing to do with the development of this device besides funneling money into it.

His brother is a well-known researcher and has a team that constructed this device. There was a story about in on the Huffington Post about 2 weeks ago.

kevin costner was the one who thought of the idea while working on waterworld
but if any celeb would come to the rescue i'd have thought it would be james cameron
he is the king of the world, ridiculously rich, and is an expert in all things of the ocean

Seconding James Cameron, he did do the Aquaman movie after all.

But seriously, I actually love Waterworld.

Or we could just fill the hole with unsold waterworld DVDs

Seriously though, how fast would this have to be spinning, and how much power is it going to take to spin a centrifuge that massive?

Waterworld was awesome when they did it the first three time with Mel Gibson and without the happy endings.

My question is why haven't they sent Bruce Willis's team down there to plug up the hole with a nuke?

They've tried the machine out on the oil that's being emitted and apparently it's too viscous for it to work properly, now scientists and engineers from BP and the other oil companies are working on tweaking it so it could handle the type of oil that's leaking.

Love this movie and especially the soundtrack. James Newton Howard scores some great movie music, and Dennis Hopper as the Deacon of the Deez is a great portrayal. Also I got a serious hard-on with the Mariner's boat going into all sorts of crazy modes.

bull shit, Costner had nothing to do with the actual idea or design; it was just his wallet that got his name associated.

gotta be honest, when Admiral Thad Allen was talking about him the other day, I did not know it was the actor. Pretty neato.

A beer brewer invented the energy (herro Joule). Just because you aren't a top tier scientist doesn't mean you can have (or invest in) visionary efforts

But yes, Costner just wrote the check it sounds like
