^ Are you talking about some fake band game shit? Nothing personal, but I gotta rant at you about this.
Even if you are trollin' haha.

Pay close attention to the rhythm of the songs, the 4-6 drum pads and tempo don't actually follow the music... I swear, if you smoke out and spent one hour learning how to actually make a beat or play guitar you would never play that game again. Nothing brings me peace like making some tracks. Download any of the DAW demos such as FL Studio the next time your bored thinking about playing rock band or guitar crack hero whatever. Some buttons and switches will never ever capture the complexity or joy of making music, and you can never learn how to improvise with those fake instruments either.

i can't fault him, though

i would pull shit like that too if i had to play the same shitty set in the same shitty lounge twice a night for fifteen nights in a row, only to move three hours down the road and do the same thing in another shitty lounge for two more weeks

god bless 'em, because i guess they're making an honest living playing music whereas i just make a pittance

but goddamn that's gotta be soul-crushing sometimes

that's what i'm saying. he's got tricks and shit and good showmanship, but if was really the best. drummer. ever. he'd be playing in some semi-famous band. odds are... any drummer that's in a decent band could pull this shit off with 3 hours of practice. it's impressive on a small scale but if he were playing with a real band he'd be the weak link most likely.

Not. Good. Drumming.

I do like how Jimmy Chamberlain is rocking out and keeps a stone solid look on his face.

See Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater. He's just straight up excellent.

sarcasm escapes ALL OF YOU.

This guy is by no measn a bad drummer, but OBVIOUSLY he is not the best drummer ever.

He is, however, one of the most fucking entertaining to watch that i have ever laid eyes on. And i am not talking from the stance of musical talent, i am talking about FUCKING FUN TO WATCH.

I love having to explain threads to people.

Neil Peart is clearly the best drummer ever when it comes to drumming ability : douchey lead vocals ratio

By the way, Max Roach deserves this title more than anyone previously mentioned in this thread.

Not enough credit goes to the Jazz drummers that were the musical pioneers, and who knew how to lead a band properly.

For female drumming, I actually nominate Karen Carpenter. That broad could rock out a jazz beat.

Mike portnoy is garbage. He does nothing but follow the wankery of the rest of the band, and has not progresses in years. Try listening to chad wickerman era zappa.

^I like Dream Theatre, but Portnoy is seriously only good when compared to the otherwise shitty array of modern drummers. You go back 20 years and this thread gets blown out of the water.

No. There are plenty of excellent modern drummers who are way better but don't follow excessive wank all day, ie brann dailor, shannon lucas or the guy from coliseum. There are way better wank following drummers also like the dude from planet x or any person who plays in one of those tech death metal bands. Being able to memorize 15 minute songs does not make you good. Formula for dream theater songs: play some shit 3x, change the time sig for one measure, play it again, chorus, repeat till the 8min mark, break out into some wank solo in 7/8, OH SHIT new solo new key switch to 6/4, long as fuck outro

what did i say about wankery?

if i wanted to listen to some faggot prog drumming i'd just listen to like bobby jarzombek or virgil donati because they are light years ahead of neil peart, but none of that shit has any feel, not that feel is even important in that kind of music where you're just showcasing how many times you can roll the dice for time signatures. None of that shit has any dynamic which is kind always disappointing because drums only have one volume

this guy plays music a fuck load heavier than Rush or DT or any of that shit but keeps it incredibly interesting, and its almost entirely in 4/4 or 6/4 or something normal, and when it does go into those weird timings he actually has feel and it doesn't sound like a fucking metronome.

dude Romain Goulon is so garbage, He has like 5% of the power and intensity that Hannes has. That band will fail until hannes quits obscura or whatever the fuck he is doing and joins again. I've seen both of them play drums twice, there is just no comparison.

Kai Hahto is almost as sick as those other guys. I don't think we will ever hear Wintersun - Time though...

i don't get the point of playing death metal if you can only play that fast because you trigger your entire kit and hit soft as fuck. Thats only legit if you're playing at like 480bpm or something that's actually physically impossible to play.

realistically if you trigger anything other than your bass pedal you are garbage, and if you trigger your bass pedal you better be playing some decent sized shows, otherwise you are garbage. No one will notice the difference in an empty venue anyways...

So prog drummers like Virgil Donati have no feel...
And then you post some links to Brann Dailor?
What the fuck are you talking about?

You think Brann Dailor has more dynamics than Dennis Chambers, Jojo Mayer, Bill Bruford, Terry Bozzio, Bill Cobham, etc?

Get the fuck out of here.

Lasersoup is getting there (VaDrum is good, but gimmicky and far from being considered a great)

I love Mastodon, and I respect Brann Dailor, but he doesn't deserve mention in a thread about best drummers ever.
