Quote : | "AT&T Eliminating "Unlimited" Internet For iPhones--Now You'll Pay For What You Eat AT&T's Latest Plan For Squeezing Money From iPhone UsersAT&T Wireless CEO: Here's Why We Won't Get Our Butts Kicked When The iPhone Goes To VerizonApple Agreed To Stick With AT&T For The iPhone Through 2012 In a change that will infuriate a tiny subset of iPhone/smartphone users and please the rest of them, AT&T is moving away from "all-you-can-eat" wireless Internet plans.
Now, you'll be able to choose from a $15/mo plan for 200 megabytes (400 photos or 100 minutes of streaming video) or $25/mo for 2 gigabytes.
This switch should eventually save 98% of AT&T's customers money: Both new plans will be cheaper than the current $30 all-you-can-eat plan, and AT&T says that all but 2% of its customers use less than 2 gbs of wireless data a month.
The remaining 2%, meanwhile, are helping to wreck the performance of AT&T's wireless network for everyone else: AT&T says that 3% of its customers account for a whopping 40% of the traffic on its network.

But they don't say 98% of customers use less than 200 MB/month... So technically if you use 500 MB per month you're still in that 98% range, and you have to buy the 25/mo plan because otherwise you're going to be paying overages.6/2/2010 10:40:49 AM |

I just thought this was to make 2% of their user base (that they don't want) jump ship to Verizon, while making their prices more competitive. 6/2/2010 10:42:20 AM |

^^^^ yeah i would assume it's inevitable...though i'm not surprised at&t is leading the charge.
Sprint has cheap plans with unlimited data and tethering though, I wonder how they get away with it at the moment? not as many smartphone users (read: data consumers) on their network?] 6/2/2010 10:45:32 AM |

I don't see Sprint following suit.
There are not any profits in voice service anymore which is why they want to milk all of the can off the data.
Also I think they just want people to use the wifi connections on their phone instead of streaming hours of Pandora and video over the wireless network. 6/2/2010 11:00:37 AM |

But what percentage of that could you have been using wifi instead?
Quote : | "AT&T just dropped a bit of a bombshell, doing away with its "unlimited" data plans in favor some new tiered options. Before we go into details, note that current voice and data plans won't change unless you want them to, and the new plans won't be available until June 7. Now, for the meat:
The DataPlus plan: You get 200 megabytes of data for $15 a month. If you go over that, you get another 200MB for another $15. AT&T says that 65 percent of its smartphone customers use less than 200MB a month. (Surely that's nobody here.)
The DataPro plan: You get 2 gigabytes of data for $25 a month. If you go over that, you get another 1GB for $10. AT&T says 98 percent of its customers use less than 2GB a data a month. (For what its worth, even I fall under that category.)
Tethering: Finally -- legitimate tethering on AT&T (for better or for worse, 'cause you're gonna have to share this with iPhone and iPad users). Another $20 a month gets you access, and you'll be pulling from the same 2GB pool as the DataPro plan. So if you start going over, you might not be saving all that much, if any." |

well right now the only android phone that you can use 3G and have root access on AT&T's network without developer tools is the nexus one... which you can't buy with a contract so you'd have to pay like 550 for it
so far this billing period (13/31 days in) i've used 408.10 MB of my unlimited] 6/2/2010 11:17:51 AM |

longbow_fc All American 1163 Posts user info edit post |
a little over estimating...
2000mb X .5 = 1000 + 140 (regular access bill) = 1140.00 rounded up to 1200
i didnt see the above post. but what happenes between 3 and 4, is another 1 gb just another $10?
the post i read talked about overages at $.49 per mb, but wasnt a reliable source...
so for $45 you get tethering and 2 gb... that sucks...

i share your surprise - tethering seemed the LAST thing AT&T would ever do, the tiered structure was a forgone conclusion, but i predict it won't last more than say 5-10 years then everything will be totally unlimited everything (assuming of course that other companies continue on that trend). 6/2/2010 2:01:03 PM |

I am glad to know I will no longer be subsidizing the nerds that use 20x more bandwidth than me and I will be paying $5 less than what I currently pay. For right now I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that as wireless data usage increases they will adjust their plans accordingly. 6/4/2010 7:46:18 AM |
