The city estimates that the manhole, behind 4112 Kaplan Drive, had been overflowing for three days, spilling an estimated 28,800 gallons of sewage. More than half of the sewage reached an unnamed tributary to Walnut Creek. The spill was caused by the partial collapse of a sewer main, according to the city. It was reported at 7:30 p.m. and stopped an hour later. Earlier in the week, a sewer main clogged with paper towels and rags caused an estimated 19,200 gallons of sewage to flow into Walnut Creek.
