I'm not real computer savvy, and am looking for a laptop in the $200-$400 range. Don't need it for anything other than basic computer use, internet, office suite etc. Also, if anybody wants an ibook g4 that powers up then freezes up after about a minute let me know, I'll sell it to you. It's got a brand new seagate hardrive. 6/7/2010 3:36:16 PM |

The bare minimum dual core laptops on Newegg are around $499.
You could also get a netbook for less.
Or buy used. 6/7/2010 3:57:29 PM |

Go look through the last week of Slickdeals.net
There have been a 1/2 dozen or more laptops on there that are killer deals for around or under 450 bucks.
Pay the little more and get a MUCH better laptop that will last you years to come. 6/7/2010 7:33:25 PM |

try the 400-600 range and you'll get you a crappy laptop that won't freeze up all the time, will get your simple tasks done quickly, and won't break after 6 months. 6/7/2010 7:41:28 PM |

Asus makes solid products, I would take that over a comparable Dell/HP/Acer laptop. 6/10/2010 1:39:58 PM |

^^ it's okay, i guess...it's:
- heavy (5.7lbs), - larger than i could stand (15.6"), - got a horrible webcam, especially in low light (0.3mp, wtf asus?), - relatively thick (1.4 inches "thin," haha), - got an only so-so processor (45nm instead of 32nm, and 1mb L2 bothers me for some reason) - got only 3gb of outdated DDR2 memory
for ~$430 plus tax, i think you could do better...my fiancée's lenovo is 14" (much more manageable, IMO), 20% lighter, 20% thinner, has a usable webcam, and has 4gb of DDR3...it also has bluetooth, which the one you listed does not...the proc is, admittedly, an SU7300, but considering that proc will handle even photoshop, i can't imagine why you'd want a T4400 when you could get a power-sipping SU proc that does almost as much...also, hers was $416 after tax and shipping
*shrug*

yeah, as long as you're happy paying that much for something that performs like a netbook without all of the benefits, that's all that matters 6/10/2010 4:53:51 PM |

i'm actually really impressed so far considering it was only 350 bucks, of course I haven't seen what kind of longevity I'll get out of it. I didn't want a netbook, too small. I don't even really see how you could make an argument I should have saved money and got a netbook, it's a whole different category I wasn't interested in due to size. It gets on the internet, and is plenty fast, thats really all I needed. 6/10/2010 7:29:24 PM |

this is how:

which is exactly what a netbook is for
don't get me wrong, i DO understand your point...a lot of people don't care for tiny netbooks and if size is important to you (*snicker*), then a netbook isn't a contender
at the same time, i don't understand the point of spending more money and lugging around a brick for the sole purpose of surfing the web
to each their own and if you're happy, that's what matters

packfootball All American 1717 Posts user info edit post |
^^seriously though my blackberry also does those things mentioned, but it's not the same genre of device I was looking for. That's my point about the netbook. I'm not doubting that netbooks are great, I just don't want one. 6/11/2010 12:12:39 PM |

^ I feel ya about the blackberry/smartphone thing. Sure, I can surf the net and make Powerpoint, Keynote, Excel, Word files on my iPhone, etc. but on a tiny screen, it's not worth it. And I can't stand tiny netbooks (boobs or otherwise). A sizable screen is what I require.

I love my 12" 1366 by 768 Asus netbook with a nvidia 9400m (ion) and dual core atom. Does pretty much anything i throw at it. Battery life kinda sucks at 5-6 hours but the trade off is more power and a larger screen. 6/16/2010 12:12:02 PM |
