the moon is not always available, and while I have large pupils, they could never get big enough to really see what is going on, especially with trees blocking some of the light

I too have an Inova X03. It throws like a mofo.

My daily pocket light is an Ultrafire A30B:

My house and truck lights are Maglite LEDs of various sizes and types. The newer Rebel Mags kick more ass than the old ones, I think due to a newer reflector shape.

Another one of my house lights is a Streamlight TLR-1 stuck to a CZ SP-01

I have a bunch of other lights...
One thing I'm working on now is an LED conversion for an incandescent headlamp.
It's a Pelican 2640. The plan is to mount a Cree XR-E Q5 where the incan bulb was.
So far I've got it wired up. The Pelican is 4 AAs, so I've got the power feeding into a 1000mA regulator.
I got the Q5 and reflector from an Ultrafire A30B that didn't work when I got it. The Pelican with the Q5 is way brighter than the A30B, but that's because the A30B's regulator feeds 1000mH at 4.2v and my batteries are 3.7v (vs 1000mA@6v for the regulator I'm using in the Pelican)
I'll be posting pics when I'm done. All I have to do is cut a piece of aluminum to mount the LED and reflector onto, then mount the mount into the body of the Pelican.

There are plenty of flashlights that are considerably cheaper and just as bright, some even brighter.
Just about any Cree XR-E, Seoul P4, Luxeon K2 TFFC, etc pushed at a high enough amperage will give you 135lm or better.

Here's a Cree MC-E (700 lumens) for you...only $36
