cuz they already did 2/3/etc. they are off the numbering track and the games are substantially different in gameplay (a lot of times) so they use some other naming convention.
they still use the same characters and moves and whatnot so they also need a way to identify it as a MK game. how else would you like them to do it? 6/8/2010 3:35:23 PM |

Is this a new movie that is in the works or just a fan film or what?
V Ah, that's where I saw her, I knew I recognized her from somewhere. 7 of 9.

If they were to call this Mortal Kombat 4 (or 3 or 5 or whatever) plenty of people would write it off as another piece of crap attempt to cash in on the series (which it may still be). And they shouldn't just name it Mortal Kombat, IMO, as that was the name of the first movie. I think the title of this is fine and makes sense. At least it's better than if they went with something like "Mortal Kombat: Return to the Tournament of Death" or some other long ass name. 6/8/2010 4:45:54 PM |

the Rebirth means they're trying to make the story reborn as a gritty, realistic story...they try to scientifically justify the origin of Reptile, Baraka, etc...the other movies were more fantasy-based
I've also heard this is basically a 'demo' to appeal to investors who would eventually pay for the full movie to come out...but everything seems kind of under wraps at this point 6/8/2010 4:50:14 PM |

this would be fucking awesome if they did it.
@the picture of the girl: Sub Zero's clan (including Sub Zero himself) killed Scorpion, his clan, and his wife and child. They likely raped the wife (hence the open shirt). Scorpion sold his soul to the devil to return to the living realm to stalk Sub Zero and take revenge. Pretty cool how he says that Sub Zero already died. I wonder what story arcs they are going to take...obviously Sub Zero being dead is after MK1, but Cage dead?
Here's my screencap of Sub Zero

just to confirm what someone else said; this isn't an actual movie. It's sort of "Test footage" to see if people are interested and to hopefully stir enough interest for it to get made.

"Okay, so... Mortal Kombat," she tweets. "It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film."
Ryan said she did her role as a favor to a friend. "No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was," she adds. I can tell you what my reaction was: stoked.
While a Mortal Kombat film was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (of Resident Evil movie fame) in 1995, an updated take on the franchise has been languishing in development hell. However, a lawsuit has been filed by the development partner of the original film as it signed a contract in 2006 to do a sequel.
The Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short was helmed by Kevin Tancharoen. He directed last year's Fame remake." |

I'm wondering how they are going to "scientifically explain" all the magic that was a big part of MK.
"Oh this guy? His code name is raiden. He's implanted magnets into his body that allow him to levitate about 3 feet of the ground for a short period of time. If he has a running start, he will basically fly across the room. Also, he can shoot lightning. Oh yeah, and teleport. SCIENCE!!" 6/9/2010 1:47:29 PM |
duro982 All American 3088 Posts user info edit post |
kinda making some assumptions, aren't you? I know they explained 2 characters scientifically... that doesn't mean they would do so for all of them.
-- not saying the thing for baraka is all that... "good?" but 2 out of 30 or so possible characters (from just the original 3 games) doesn't sell me on this idea that everything will be "real world."

I wouldn't hold anything from this short as concrete for a future movie. Good ideas, but they have to sell it to a studio as well.

Who the fuck am I kidding. They released Spiderman 3.

I would assume that magic eventually finds its way into this. Reptile and Baraka are, for the most part, the only major "mutants" in the first two games, with Kintaro and Goro being the other big names. SubZero may be relying on technology looking on the screencap above.
However, Scorpion is already shown to be supernatural, with his escape from the handcuffs and his rolled back eyes. I would bet that it is a hint for some magic leeway. In some ways it could be easier to sell the idea that there is magic rather than previously unknown species of reptilian humanoids and mutants roaming today's world.

nothing about escaping from handcuffs or rolled back eyes (if thats what they were) suggests magic to me. it seemed like they went out of their way to make this completely based in reality, because you know cage would've flashed the shadow kick or energy balls before he got finished if they were gonna do it like that 6/9/2010 5:59:10 PM |

More so the line of "I sold my freedom and I can have it back whenever I want" seemed analogous to "I sold my soul to the devil", but maybe that's just me knowing his background.
Quote : | "Reptile and Baraka are from Outworld." |
Correct, they were brought in from Outworld but their physical features set them apart from the other fighters. I was saying that a movie trying to keep things in today's reality might have an easier time of saying 'there is magic/voodoo/spooky/whatever' than 'there are mutants like Baraka and Reptile everywhere you just dont see them'.
You could try the "these serial killers are from another dimension *wavy hands*" but I don't see that one going too well.6/10/2010 2:47:27 PM |
