I am closing on my very first house on the 21st, and my family wants me to gather a list of things I'd like/need as housewarming gifts. I have a decent amount of dishes and silverware and furniture and stuff, so other than some cookware, I have no idea what to ask for. I need some ideas. Thanks

Have your crazy pyro uncle set the place on fire. It'll get good and warm.

Assuming you already have a full toolbox, I won't mention that (but seriously, if you do lack such, BE SURE it's on your list. All the tools and gadgets. Leave nothing out)

new vacuum cleaner

compost box/bucket/gadget

those gizmos that warm up the shower water for you without you having to wait all day and waste tons of cold water

Lowe's gift cards x infinity.

I thought I had everything I needed when I moved in as well, but I've spent close to $1000 already on all kinds of random tools and materials for stuff I never thought about until I got moved in and started working on the place.

Lowes gift cards are probably the best all around solution -- here are a few things we have had to purchase since we moved into our house in November:

Snow Shovel (Thanks NC for snowing the year we move in)
All sorts of random screw drivers, hammers, levels, drywall saw, tape measure
Post hole digger and 2x shovels (a flat faced one and one with more of a point)
Lawn Mower
Weed Eater
2x new hoses
Paint
Paint supplies (Rollers, trays, brushes, tape, etc)
A new Vacuum
caulk, caulking gun
Gas canister
2x new ceiling fans
a new light fixture for the kitchen
new shower heads for both showers

Random decorative items -- paintings, candles, decorative fixtures, etc

Since we moved in, we have also purchased a ton of stuff to fix random issues from Lowes -- drywall, drywall tape, putty, and insulation, etc.

Basically -- besides the decorative items, we have purchased everything via Lowes. When we moved in we had never thought about most of those little things I listed above. Hope this helps some

Surely your house is warm enough with this heat wave.

everyone pretty much nailed it... your best bet is to get stuff for outside and the yard.
We moved in our first house last June and I was making trips to Lowes/Home Depot on a regular basis. I didn't realize just how few tools and yard work supplies I had.

+1 for Lowes gift cards (or Home Depot, whichever is closer to the house)
